Hey All
I have a 45 with a B in it so I'm really a diesel guy so this inquiree
is for a friend with a fj45 with 2f.

He is doing some tune ups and wondering if it is worth while doing a turbo on the 2f and transfering it to propane for the economy $ of fill ups.

Pros and Cons of this idea ?

Anyone done propane on their 2F ?
Anyone done a turbo ? if so what kind of turbo ?

Usage would be some high way, used as a work truck in a faming community
lite off road use but may be put through the paces of some tough trails.
It will likely be used to tow a load of fire wood or something heavy.
He has the 4 speed trans and stock split rims and tires.
Open diffs.
... Pic is of friend about 8 years ago doing a frame off with galvanized frame resto on his 78 fj45.
Opinions most welcome !!!

Thanks

A.M.

I have driven several vehicles with propane [down here we call it LPG] and it is significantly cheaper to run. At the pump here it's half the price of ULP and returns 85% of the power of ULP. There is a 15% power drop in my experience though. To run an engine long-term on LPG you need to convert the engine to run on ULP/LPG. This process hardens the valve stem seals and the last time I checked it was $2k for a straight six head. So perhaps your friend could get some figures together and see if it will be worth doing.

You can either replace the entire fuelling system with straight LPG or you can have both LPG and ULP and switch between the two. If you choose to keep both fuels then you'll need to find somewhere for the tank. If it goes under the truck I'd suggest a bash plate.

If it was all highway miles then I'd suggest an H55F but as your friend will be towing, light off road work etc then an LPG conversion sounds reasonable. Just need to make sure there's enough service stations around to fill up at - not all in Australia carry LPG and perhaps it's the same in Canada?

another australian here

my experience
i am planning to go sole lpg/propane turbo on a toyota 5R engine, as the 5R were built to run sole lpg in forklifts and taxi all the 5R engines received the same quality parts even if they were not used for lpg.
now as i have been told on a scale but the Australian lpg is equivalent to around 120 octane and the down fall of duel fuel systems is lpg burns better over 10.5:1 compression ratio and beyond premium petrol/gasoline up to that that it works well with diesels. the US propane is supposedly about 110 our lpg 120 and my 5R is 8:1 and at that compression ratio is unable to get the optimum out of the lpg and hence is not efficient compared to standard fuel, however when you start force feeding the engine you up the compression ratio that it starts becoming more suitable for lpg propane and not suitable for petrol gasoline without starting to look at decompressing the engine, where with lpg propane they just get more fuel efficient or just start producing more power.
for me it was an old book my uncle showed me about turbos and lpg propane for fuel efficiency (80's fuel crisis) that first clicked my interest on the topic, this book had a picture of a 1977 toyota 20R pickup sole propane turbo that was a university project in the US. late 70's old school turbo and external waste gate and @ 0psi fuel consumption was equal in mpg to that of a standard gasoline 20R with slight power increase, @ 3psi was the most economical which had improved fuel economy and power over the standard 20R, above 3psi fuel economy decreased but power increased significantly. the sole propane turbo used less fuel than the standard 20R gasoline in an around the US tour @3psi and as well had better power, unfortunately the project was shut down as it violated emission laws (California i guess).
a 5R is 2000cc ohv much like a smaller f engine, the turbo i have for mine is a new unit removed from a wrx subaru set @7psi, most of the time it should never reach 7psi as the 5R like the f are low revving engines and unless my rk101 stout is fully loaded, towing a trailer or going up hill the around original 100hp @7psi could be around 150hp but with lpg 200hp is not impossible

I run Propane on my N/A 2F and in my experience, there is a notable power loss but improved drive ability and tune ability.

A draw through propane mixer pre turbo would work well.
