I'm going Sat. morning to see if they are going to replace my tires. I got a letter from Toyota about a recall for possible tire bead damage from the factory on early manufactured fj's. Apparently someone doesn't know how to mount tires. Soooo, if they replace my tires, I can upgrade to a better tire and just pay the difference. So now is where your knowledge comes in handy. I know it was posted before, but I don't have enough time to find that thread. Can someone please tell me the best tire whether it be a/t or mud and the largest that can fit my stock rims and not rub. Thanks. Much appreciated.:)

I have Goodyear MTR's 285/70/17's on the stock alloy rims with no lift. Zero rubbage. And I actually use it in the bush. ;)

Those are the exact tires i want, good to know that the 285's have zero rubbing. Post us a pick if you get a chance.

As long as they are the same size in width, and you are using the same stock alloy rims, I don't see why they wouldn't fit. They do get pretty damned close to rubbing when wheeling, though.
And when you mount your new spare on the back, it juuuust fits, and the window still opens.:D

Just out of curiousity what did you pay for the 5 tires? These MTR's are by far my first choice but so far they are also the most expensive. How's the road noise and also i was wondering how much it affected your mileage. Prices in Canadian dollar prefered thanks.

Well, prices in Canadian $$ is what I paid.:D
I have a buddy with a boss with some pull.;) I got a bit of a deal. Price I could get myself was $359 each. Price I got with help $297each. That is out the door. I have other connections for mounting/balancing.:D
Road noise is more than the stock car slicks it came with. But I prefer it. They will get a bit louder as they wear. I had a set of 37" MTR's on my 4Runner, and they do get a tad louder as they wear. But I have 38.5" Swampers on the Runner now, so anything is quieter. As for diffrence in milage...couldn't tell you. These were mounted the second day I had the truck.

I recommend the BFG MT's. 285 70 17.
This is my 4th or 5th set of MTs and have never had ANY problems with them.

I installed BFG AT's 285/70/17. Fit great, ride great, stay in balance longer, have better tread wear than MT's. Really depends on where you use the vehicle - I'm in the desert.

One fit item to note, my FJ came with the spare cover, It does not accomodate the 285.

I personally don't recommend the BFG's. I don't know about the all terrain, but the BFG Mud has weak sidewalls. I had a set of brand new 35" ones on my 4Runner years ago. Right when the new design came out. I cut 3 sidewalls within a few months. I replaced them with the 37" Goodyear MTR's, and never had a problem.
I would imagine the all terrains share the same sidewall. Unless you don't plan to wheel it, I would definatly spend the extra couple of bux on the Goodyear. Plus, IMO, the Goodyears just perform better on and off road.

I have also used the BFG A/T great tire long lasting and does well in multiple area's. The MTR's I have had as well. They were alittle better in some area, but all around the BFG did better for me. Another topic, does anyone know how the are determining if you have the defective tires? By vin possibly, and if so what specific on the vin would I be looking for.

My reasoning for buying the Goodyear MTR's would have to be the year round use, from what i've been reading the Goodyear's are better in the snow and living in Alberta we see at least 5 months of off and on snow fall. Not to mention the Goodyear's look mean. I'm still working my connections to try and get a deal. If anyone in Canada know's of a good place to get them for a fair price let me know. Thanks

You might want to consider getting the tires siped, as well. Would help in the slushy/ light dusting of snow. I plan to do it to mine, but I only see rain in the winter. Every little bit helps.
Just out of curiousity...what price are you getting for the MTR's?

If you've received a letter than your on the recall list. It only pertains to early release fj's. By the way, thanks for the info on tire selection. I think I might go with the BFG muds, it looks pretty aggressive.

Is that the stock height? Also how about those lights on the roof rack, how are they installed?

I rode in a FJ last weekend to the FJ Trail Team event up at Reiter Trails.

He has 285x70x17 BFG ATs, and they rubbed even in the parking lot.
Granted he is not using the stock rims, he has Mohave teflon wheels on it.

From reading here it seems 285s might not rub with the stock rims?
I plan on keeping the stock rims for awhile.
I have been running Wild Country TXRs for years on my 4Runner, a very good off road/on road tire, they last forever.
Current set on my 4Runner has been on since 2000, and they still look new.

But I have my eye on these Cooper STTs, more agressive sidewalls and tread.

Do you think that will rub?
Maybe it is best to stick with 265x70x17s until a lift gets put on?

All I can tell ya is...my 285's don't rub AT ALL. And I wheel it pretty hard. For what it is....
