I have a stock wheel, stock suspension 2012 Sequoia Platinum, anyone tried a 275/65 R20 tire on it? I know that is basically the limit, but I am also seeing online that some people are saying that the Platinum cannot run as large of a tire before rubbing.

I am specifically looking at the Michelin LTX Defender Platinum, which has a claimed manufacturer diameter of 34.1", but that isnt normally accurate in the real world. I currently have the Michelin Defender LTX MS, and I need something a that is more puncture resistant.

I can't answer your question, but I would like to piggy back on to it with a question of my own...

How low can you air down a tire that's on a 20" wheel?

*edit- I can answer your question. Mickey Thompson Baja Boss. Of all the tires I've run over the decades, I've never had a better all-arounder tire than this. I don't run your size (see sig), but if your size performs the way mine does, you will never consider another tire for any type of terrain other than mud. That said, I have included three other tires that I've seen get rave reviews here for your consideration.

I drive off road at higher speeds. I live near Padre Island National Seashore, a 65 mile long beach where I go weekly to shark fish in the surf. The beach is 4x4 only, and I typically drive through it between 35 and 55 mph. Lots of storm debris, ruts, logs, washed up trees etc, it is completely unmaintained in any way and it changes daily. I usually put in 60 to 70 miles of that a week.

My Michelin Defender LTX tires have done quite well this summer, no flats, two screws, and a couple largish cuts down to the belts that I glued back together.

That said, I would like something that is even more durable. I also go on cross country road trips 3 or 4 times a year, highway manners is a high priority. I also tow trailers while going cross country, so that capability is important too.

Basically, I need a fairly tame highway touring tire that is also a legitimate off road tire. That tire segment, for obvious reasons, is pretty slim.

I would take a look at the Cooper at3. They're being discontinued in favor of a newer more aggressive tread, but if they still have them in your size they're a great option and very quiet on the highway.

If your generally happy with the Michelin defender and are using an XL or sl version you might just need to swap to an LT version for a tougher tire. That's what I did. I would have switched to the cooper but it involved a lot of hassle (and money) because I'm in Alaska and Costco sells the Michelin. So Michelin was the choice.

One new tire that looks interesting but hasn't been out long enough to hear anything about is the Bridgestone AT ascent. It was on my short list but Costco can't order it yet in the size I want.

My suggestion remains- Baja Boss. It's as close to what you're looking for. In my experience, it behaves like a highway AT tire on the road and an RT bordering on mudder off road. 50k mile warranty as well. It'll never be a tame highway tourer, but it's a "legitimate" off roader by almost every metric.
