I've read in the 60-series section about the simple mod to warn you if your headlights are left on-which is a mod that is for the 12v gas engine rigs.

??--Anyone know how to do this mod in the diesel, 24V (2H) rigs?....I know the headlights on the HJ60 are 12V--but the mod for 12 rigs doesn't work since the rest of the HJ system is 24V--so, 2 different voltages between the dash lights and the headlights systems...

Thanks--!

On my BJ74 there is a speed warning buzzer. I disconnected the buzzer and tapped into the dash lights. I wired the buzzer to the interior dome light. Now anytime a door opens with the lights on the buzzer goes off. Find a 24v buzzer and you should be good to go.

Thanks Urbancarrot for the idea and reply.
Actually I did buy a 24V buzzer (expensive/rare here in Oregon) and tried to hook it up as noted in the headlight mod 12v wiring diagram shown on those postings--but, because I have 24v dash lights and 12 headlights...it didn't work....though it is possible the 'mechanic' (ME) may be the issue.

I tried wiring variables (risky of shorting something out, I know..) but no success. Called a diesel LC mechanic in BC, Canada and they didn't have any quick ideas either...

BUT, often MUD members have unique experiences beyond the 'average shop' so thought I would give a shout and see if anyone had an idea for the wiring options...no dead batteries yet, but have left the lights on a few times..taught my youngest daughter the other day how to coast start the LC just in case she ever has a dead battery in her Bronco II--
Thanks,

One of the Best and easiest mods you can do. Has saved my battery more than a few times. I used a 12v buzzer, ironically; your hard to find 24 volt buzzer may or may not work. (try powering it on 12 volts to see if it will function)

The mod is dead simple. I soldered 2 wires to the exposed metal on the fuses shown in the (sideways) picture below, which are one of the headlight fuses and the dome light fuse. The wires run to the buzzer. Mount the buzzer under the dash.
absolute magic.

Some people just shove the wires and the fuse into the fuse slot but I wanted something a little more solid. Only issue is if either of those fuses blow (which hasn't happened yet) I'll have to resolder the wires to a new fuse. It's been a while since I did this mod, so I can't remember the details of how I worked it out, but I think the buzzer shorts out between a 24 volt circuit and a 12 volt circuit which leaves 12volts to power the buzzer when the headlights are on and you pull the ignition key out.
I take no responsibility for you damaging anything on your truck, but I have had this hooked up for more than a year with no adverse side effects. - other than the way the clock goes jittery when the buzzer sounds - still haven't figured that out.

Anyway, it's easy to test by just holding the wires against the fuse terminals. Also the side of the fuse that the wire is soldered to is important 'cause it leaves the fuse in the circuit to trip if something goes sideways.

HTH

Ps I couldn't figure out how to rotate the picture, you are looking at the left side of the fuse block with the blue fuse at the bottom...

Thanks Freewheel--Can I ask a few more questions...
1) So, do you have to drive with your headlights on all the time to prevent the buzzer from sounding?
2) It sounds like it activates when the key is removed and headlights on 'ONLY'?
3) It sounds like the 12V buzzer didn't get fried by the 24V..?

Thanks!

1 headlights can be off or on while driving. It only triggers when you pull the key out and the headlights are on.
3 because of the way it's wired into the headlight circuit, there is only 12 volts going to the buzzer.

The picture is turned the correct way now, when I posted it, it was sideways. Maybe one of the moderators fixed it.

Ps how's your charge lamp relay problem? Did you ever fix that?

Freewheel--thanks for answering my questions. Once I finish helping my son rebuild his 4Runner engine and the house trim/molding project for my wife, then I will get back to the LC for this mod and others!

Charge lamp--good memory!! No solution yet--relay tested fine and replaced with another just in case--no change, checked connections and found no problems--annoying. Minor change; when vehicle is first started in the AM, have to run up to 2,500 RPM to kick on the charging then all lamps go off--but then during the same day when started again, only have to go up to 1,900/2,000 RPM to kick off lamps--possible magnetic charge remaining in the excited stator..?

Since I put so much time into this issue with no solution and even the shops couldn't find it..I'm living with it for now and moving onto other things so that I have a sense of 'progress' on the modifications and 'list' for the LC--list is long--and it seems a few more items get added as I finish a few on the list.

Cold/wet Spring here in Oregon so likely be mid summer before I get the rig up in the hills (snow is low also) to try out the front/rear Aussie lockers and the AXT turbo.

Thanks again Freewheel for the warning buzzer mod information--since I 4wheel by myself most of the time or backpack, need to make sure all is top notch and reduce 'issues' like a dead battery.

Wow-it’s 2025 and I’m finally getting to this mod: so many life challenges arose—LC parked or in the shop most of the past 14 years; nearing the end of a very long restoration/build—final accessories wiring; the mod didn’t work with my 24v buzzer-so headed to parts store to see if that does it.

Don’t have a speed alarm to tag into like the BJ has-tried switching wires to opposite buzzer connection—still buzzed all the time on keyed power dome and headlight wire.

Off to napa

Hello Dmjay—that would be easier and faster in many ways; but the rig isn’t road legal yet and secondly we are way out—‘in the bush’ as they say in AUS.

The 2-parts stores yesterday didn’t have the 12v buzzer since the 24v one didn’t work out-so waiting for the one we had to order to show up next week.

This has been a very long restoration process-15 years; electrical is my weakest area and all the mods all at once is a lot for me; 24v, inverted keyed fuse block systems and 12v constant power and the 2-24v winches with remote wired switches inside—I’d rather it be a bit at a time but want all hidden wires bundled nicely under the carpets-then I can build seat brackets-then finally install the seats.

We are getting there.

What are you up to this weekend in AUS?

Freewheel—you were correct in your comment years ago; the 24v buzzer didn’t work;
2-local parts stores searching:no success for 12v buzzers.
Amazon order arrived and I installed the 12v buzzer and success!!

I want to thank whomever originally thought of and posted this mod!!
