24-12volt trailer wiring

If you already have a 12v to 24v converter, then this ebay unit is a bit pricey. If you don't have the converter already this seems like a nice way to do it.

Toyota has a different way of wiring it's lights, which is why you need the little trailer translater box you see at auto parts stores. I can't remember the details of it, but if this ebay unit takes that into account, then all the better.

I will be pulling a boat and utility trailer. No brakes or external battery. It's just a pain alway's swapping the bulbs from those trailers from 24-12 and yet the 24v has no turn signals. So if that converter is the best way to go I will run the 24v into the converter than a 12 trailer wiring converter kit on the other side so I will have a 12v supply with signals also. I guess this is the best way to go. OUCH on the price.. Any other ideas??
Thanks for the replies

Get the dual voltage LED lights, They take anything from around 10V to 30V and convert it internally for the lights - bonus is they never blow!

If its a boat trailer, these lights are available in a permanatly sealed enclosure, with the 7core wire comeing from it. Saves on the problems you can have with traditional globe holders on boat trailers

trailer wire converter, (available at crappy tire or anywhere, converts from the trucks amber turn signals, to trailer where the brake light flashes) 20bucks.

first time I did this, I used 4 relays so the converter didn't see 24v, but the one in my 70 has been there for years running on 24v so they don't seem to care about voltage...( but if you're worried, buy an extra relay.)

3 (or 4) bosch 24v relays usually pretty cheap..

pretty easy to wire up, use the relays to switch a 12v power supply to the individual wires on the trailer plug.

then you can tow anyones trailer without messing with bulbs.

cheers,

i ordered the set up from redarc in australia, i have trailer brakes as well

hey all

yeah i used the trailer voltage reducer from redarc in OZ
10 amp, cost roughly $120 aud

this means i can hook any ones trailer up without having to worry..

sometimes we dont have the luxury of being able to change out bulbs if its a hired trailer or some elses boat trailer for example. lol

good product
Trailer Lighting voltage reducer by REDARC

its installed via a fuse block from the existing wiring harness.. easy
i placed it in my rear quarter panel in my BJ74

its a no brainer now its in.. nothing to worry about.. wohooo

I have also installed their 24-12V batter charger.. which is connected to 3rd aux batt which i run all my accessories (fridge, amp....)

good luck
