I had to change my timing set due to it jumping a tooth. One of the Gateway Cruisers had asked me if it had bent any valves. After driving it a short while it developed a rather loud valve clatter at around 3k rpm so I decided to check the valve lash which was fine.I then decided to go ahead and pull the head off to see if there was any damage. There was nothing apparent at first, no signs of contact between valves and pistons. None of the rockers or valves had excessive play. I started to lap the valves to clean up the seats that were a little worn and discovered that #4 intake valve was indeed bent. My plans are to have the valves and seats reground and replace the one that was bent. I have checked the head deck surface and it won't need reground.

My question to you guys, is there anything else that I may be overlooking? My engine temp and oil pressure were both good upon tear down.

Hmmmm. I just thought all 22R engines were noisy at all RPM. Maybe I too have a valve problem. Mine runs great though. I can't think of anything to add though. Tony.

After the timing chain it ran great but the clatter was very much worse than it had ever been before and only at around 3k and above. This truck has been entirely too much fun and I want to be able to abuse the snot out of it for a long time to come.:D

I finally got it back together after a couple of parts delays, one of which was the gasket kit was short one valve seal. I put new valve springs on while I had it apart which helped quiet the rockers quit a bit but I guess I have a lower end problem that is causing the noise. It now sounds like a diesel in certain situations. I hope I don't do any excessive damage untill I can afford to rebuild the bottom end.

sorry to hear it...

Sounds like you may have spun a rod bearing. First bearing I would check is where your valve was bent. The excess slop of a bad bearing could have caused additional up travel of the piston. I had this problem before back in my Datsun days, and I had piston damage where the lands cracked after the piston came in contact with the bottom of the head. Ultimately I had to get the crank turned, replace rod, replace piston, replace bent valves and then rebuild the entire motor since it made sense while it was apart. It may be cheaper and easier to rebuild a known "good" motor than pay the machining costs of fixing this one.

Just an update, after pulling the engine and trans, disassembly revield that #1 rod had spun the bearing. Due to lack of funds it will be some time before I can get the bottom end rebuilt. I really wanted to go to the April Fools run at Harlan, KY but I highly doubt it will happen at the moment.:bang:

On a better note I have managed to do some mods that I had the materials for already that include a 3in body lift, 3in drive train lift (for that flat belly) and the revised addition of the transfer case parking brake that uses a go kart band and drum brake.

The park brake sounds cool. I got 4 spare 22R engines. Anything I can do to help???? Just let me know. Call me if you want. No Worries! I wanna help. Can't wait to see all the other mods. It will live again. Lemme know. Tony

I will try and call Friday. This year just hasn't sarted out very good but we're just getting the bad out of the way so the rest of the year can be good.;)
