Picked up a used engine for one my Toys thinkin' I was gettin a 22R and brought it home to find out that it is a 21R. All I can find is that the 21R was a California motor of a smaller bore for emissions restrictions. It is the same block as a 20R/22R

I'd like to find out more about this powerplant...

Can anyone help?

Is there a site where I can look up serial #s and specs for the head and cam and stuff?

I'll second that. I've never seen one in the US, and I think a 22R makes more power. Wikipedia is your friend...

Wikipedia is where I got the info I mentioned above. Cali had restrictions for engines over 2000cc so Toy made the 21R just under that. I think it said 1974cc on Wiki...

I looked at a truck that had a 21r swapped in, needed a carb kit. Never found one so I passed. Parts could be a problem...overseas motor as far as the research I found.

The only time i have seen that motor was a Japanese 30,000 mile engine. It seemed to have more power than the 20r, about on par with the 22r. I somehow doubt it is less than 2k CCs but whatever....

It looks like it was in a few US models.... It is rated at:

21R
The 2-valve SOHC 2.0 L (1972 cc) 21R was produced from 1978 through 1987.
Cylinder bore was 84 mm (3.31 in) and stroke was 89 mm (3.5 in).

Output in 1978, constrained by emissions, was 105 hp (78 kW) at 5200 rpm and 116 ft·lbf (157 N·m) at 3600 rpm. Air injection and California emissions equipment for the 21R-C (1982-1985) dropped power down to 90 hp (67 kW) at 5000 rpm. The air-injected Japanese version, the 21R-U, produced 105 hp (78 kW) at 5200 rpm and 120 ft·lbf (162 N·m) at 3600 rpm but dropped to 101 hp (75 kW) at 5400 rpm and 114 ft·lbf (154 N·m) at 4000 rpm in 1986.

So we obviously don't want it..... :D I mean, come on!!! Only 78 kw's!!!!! Lame! Hehehehe

Yep, that is the quote that got my attention... Like Trevor said, "Wikipedia is your friend..."

Now I'm starting to wonder why it is listed to make as much power as the early 22R. It has to be in the head and cam. The only difference in the bottom end is the bore cause they all share the same stroke. I will have to look a bit closer to see if anything from this motor can be used to "upgrade" the horsepower output of our 22Rs.

Wow, nobody knows why the little brother is so fast?

I guess I'll have to tear all three down and see what is in them.

I have one of each that all need rebuilt so I might be able to figure out all the differences.

I'm shocked that I can't find more info about the little R...
