I'm 10,500 miles into the vehicle and yesterday I brought it in for a 10K service appt. at the local Toyota dealer. In the process of changing the oil, the tech. discovers an oil leak by the oil pan and asks me to bring it back for a more detailed diagnosis. So I bring it in this morning and the service advisor calls me back today and tells me they need to keep the car for 5 days to replace the rear main seal. Toyota requires them to take pictures and and other verification to substantiate the problem and that adds to the wait time.

Can anyone with any experience with this repair tell me what the long term implications are for going ahead with this fix? Can there be related problems that will arise in the future? The vehicle is still under warranty. I'm told that the engine and transmission need to be removed.

Like all serious medical issues, I’d get a 2nd opinion before I let the dealer pull an engine on a basically new car.

I had what appeared to be a rear main seal leak at my first oil change. After two dealership visits, emails with Corporate and pictures back and forth, it was found to be a micro crack in the oil pan. The Tech had 2 options to make the repair: pull the engine or pull out the front axle assembly et al...they chose the latter. A very frustrating experience only ~5000 miles in.

+1 on a second opinion, or at least start asking a lot of questions about how they came to this conclusion. How did they eliminate other possibilities, etc.

But if it is a rms, a good shop will be able to do this job and you shouldn’t have any negative effects, but I would certainly talk to the master service tech in person and find out how many times he has pulled a tranny and engine from a 200.

Further update for those of you who run into a similar problem. When the dealership technician removed the transmission, he discovered that the rear main seal was fine. It turned out to be the casting on the upper oil pan was porous in a certain spot and under certain pressure and temperature conditions the oil would seep through and make it look like the rear main seal was responsible. It will be a much less troublesome procedure to change this part out. I may have the vehicle back by tomorrow.

Great news, and thanks for reporting back. 👍
