Hey all, I have a 2020 LX and lately the HUD unit or dash in that area is rattling when I drive on washboarded roads. Could be the panel behind the nav screen also, I haven’t been able to isolate it yet. Any idea if that comes out without taking the whole dash apart. Or is it easier than I suspect? Never had that part of a dash apart before so I’m clueless.

Thanks,

I briefly entertained taking my HUD out to clean out some debris but after looking at the FSM I decided against it. In my case, it wasn’t worth the hassle but depending on how bad that rattle is it may be worth it to you.

I can post some screenshots tomorrow. In short, it looked fairly detailed and involved, thee HUD unit is below the dash.

Sure I’d take a look at the screenshots, thanks

Removal is easy assuming you have trim removal tools or something similar. I did it when installing a carpool module. The video shows it done in about 3 and a half minutes.

Thanks, great video, but nothing like my 2020 USA model LX

@JeffH

here are some of the removal instructions from the FSM. I am sure there are more than one way to skin a cat.... the HUD unit is deep in there and I didn't even include the refrigerant recovery part.

Let me know if you want any more from this section as I only shared the highlights. I saw this and decided to live with the dust in there.

Thanks for the 8th guys. After looking at this I think I’ll make the 300 mile trip to the dealer. I have a CPO warranty for another 3 years and I would think it would be covered.

Any chance you could post a video of the rattle?

There have been a few owners on here with strange rattles being found to come from an area they didn’t originally think they were emanating from.

Yanking that dash, even by a professional, could cause more harm than good.

I can try but I have to find a stretch of washboard and drive about 30mph. When I bought the vehicle it had one of these installed and I need to double check it’s still mounted firmly. When I get the rattle it seems to stop when I put pressure on the dash around the HUD unit. If I try the warranty route I may need to remove it which means I think I’d need to replace the speaker grill as well.

Regarding dash noise and location and as mentioned by others, I suggest to be careful assuming the HUD system is lose.

Firstly I do not think Toyota puts something like that together causing a rattle. Just not the way the 200 series was designed and build.

In addition my experience is that a “lose item” is in a different location than the ear and brain thinks. I had a gate control sitting in the overhead sunglass holder and was convinced the “lose item” was in the glove compartment and thereafter in the dash. Opening up the sides of the dash (the easy one at the door interface) and using a bore scope camera I tried to hunt it to no prevail…

Weeks later I realized it was the gate opener which I then attached with 3M double sided tape/velcro. Sliding noise gone when cornering. I really should open the gate controller one of these days and program it into the rear view mirror opening system, but that is a different story…

So in your case, could the rear view mirror assembly make noise perhaps from a recent windshield replacement? I guess my recommendation is to drive on the washboard road and have a second person together with the driver check out many areas in the front from center console to glove compartment to doors to dash areas, center loudspeaker etc etc. Put your finger or hand on many items applying some pressure and hopefully locate the area.

Yeah yanking the dash to fix one rattle but could lead to more….

Funny, I recently noticed a rattle/vibration on my 2017 LX when I drive on corrugated roads. I realized it's the driver side speaker grill, the one tucked up at the windshield. When I hold it down as I drive, no noise. Was thinking of wedging something in there to see if it knocks down the rattling.
