Very few mud tires can sling that stuff off, especially when we're only traveling a few miles per hour....

Video:
I had no choice but to take this line and get out of the canyon. I was able to make it to the pavement and call it quits after that. Turning around wasn't an option.

@:25 I was sliding backwards. @2:50 is what I was trying to avoid doing near that edge.

The drop-off on the drivers side is about 25 feet and rises to about 250 feet as you climb around the next corner.

Your scouting run give me a better understanding of possible conditions! I was going to ask if we would have any snow drifts to chew through or gumbo mud? OK I will have chains along, sure that not what we want to do is dig and chew our way through, your photos reminds me of many of my adventures.
Gumbo mud is only good when it dry and turns to dust!

I'm hoping that with this sunshine, chains and the like wont be needed. It's beautiful out right now.

Jay here. Shelly and I have a 74 FJ40, Orion TX, SUA, 33's, ARB lockers F&R. Second Cruise Moab, first trip on Kokopelli trail or overnight wheeling in this region. Trailering the 40 from 29 Palms to Moab Monday, still working toward a place to stash the tow vehicle. Current plan is to drive the 40 from Moab to GJ, gas up, and get to the to meeting place on Tuesday AM. Should we overnight in GJ instead? Rushing to complete truck preps for trip, decide what type of tent, camp gear for trail. We did the Rubithon last summer but campsites were big and on the river, weather great. Wondering what to expect in terms of weather or trail, comms freqs, et cetera. Ready for anything regardless, looking forward to the trip, glad to see the other old school rigs and we look forward to meeting all of you.

Welcome Jay! That 40 sounds like it will get the job done! Totally your choice on when you arrive in GJ. It's about 100 miles from Moab to Fruita where you can fill up. That usually takes me 90 minutes. It's about 20 minutes from Fruita to the meet-up site, so figure a minimum of 2-2.5 hours to get from Moab, fill up and backtrack to Rabbit Valley.

I will create a separate post and email with comm freqs and more info.

Weather Forecast and Trail Information

Just a few days left to get ready. As of today, the weather looks fantastic. Full sun and temps from the mid-70s and up! There is a chance of some showers over the weekend, but nothing major. That should give the trail plenty of time to dry out.

Even with last weeks nasty weather, there were some folks camping in the meet-up area. There is plenty of room there. If for some reason the area is full, there are plenty of dispersed camping areas at that exit. You can even travel back over I-70 and camp north of the interstate. If we cannot hold our drivers meeting at that spot, we will move about 500 yards away to a large open area with pit toilets, but I'm not expecting that.

Communication

We will be using:
147.540 on HAM
Ch. 13 on CB

I sent an email with my cell number and the cell numbers of the Tail Gunners, feel free to call if you need. If you do not have my number, please send me a PM or email and I'll resend it. If you have Verizon, you will have perfect service (at least 3G) for 90% of the first day (until we arrive at camp) and you'll have service on and off for the other two days.

So we are meeting in Rabbit Valley Monday night. As far as I know they don't allow fires unless you bring a portable fire pit. is that correct?

@74bruiser Also, there may be some folks meeting up in Rabbit Valley on Monday night, but that is not the requirement. Tuesday morning at 9am is the required meet up time. Thanks!

wow, i guess i have a problem with paying attention to important details. i did not realize camping in Slickrock was going to cost 26 bucks a night at the cheapest. Kurt offered to let me set up with him at his site but i was hoping for something a little more away from my co workers/boss...no offense whatsoever to them i just don't want to feel like its a work event. Any ideas on a cheaper or even free place to camp not too far away from the event? im feeling pretty ashamed of my lack of common sense right now.

Anders and I will be looking for camping on Thursday too. I don't want to stay too close to Moab because it's nuts. We may have friends coming in early Wednesday to find spots as well.

FYI
Old enough to know better young enough to go WFO.
Will stay in GJ Monday night, meal and spirtits!
Kokopelli run, rocks-dust-mud-view=adventure!

Many memories!

Hi Stan,
Cliff Hall (@Skidoo) and I will be staying at the Day's Inn in GJ on Monday night. We'll be at the meeting point on Tuesday morning in time for your famous breakfast burritos and coffee! If there is a group getting together in GJ on Monday night, perhaps they can post details here.
Regards,
Don Larson
