Hi all -

After months of searching we located an extremely clean and well maintained 2014 Premium with 60K miles.

Our previous vehicles with minor builds have been the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gen 4Runners. What we live about the GX is a little more comfort and the V8.

Phase 1 in our build is complete incl Ironman 2.5” Foam core suspension with UCA’s. Black Rhino 17” wheelset wrapped with Nitto Grapplers, FrontRunner roofrack with our trusty ARB awning and RIGd Industries Ultraswing with the FrontRunner table which has proved indispensable esp when camping.

Phase 2 will include sliders and CBI stealth front bumper.

My wife and I travel to CO, AR, WY and MT frequently bro explore and the GX has been the perfect overlanding vehicle for us.

I appreciate the forum and have picked up great ideas from all of you.

Great looking rig! I'm looking into getting the Rigd Ultraswing. I have a Kuat NV bike rack. Do you have any issues getting your pedals to clear the full sized spare? I'd love to see a side profile picture with the bikes attached if you have any.

Thanks for the compliments. I went with the Ultraswing because it got great reviews, built by mountain bikers and was a little less in cost than having to cut up my rear bumper and installation of a rear bumper. Plus we use the FrontRunner table more than I thought I would - great for a place to place tools, a two burner stove or great place to put your beer! The Kuat fits with plenty of room. I’m running a 33” Grappler which is a pretty good sized spare.

Are you finding that you get a ton of wobble from the bike rack when you have bikes loaded? I have the Kuat NV and the Rigd tire carrier as well. The tire carrier doesn’t move, but I see a lot of wobble when I have the bikes loaded. They stay planted, but it’s a little unnerving.
 
Isn't there a "wedge" type lock that one screws to avoid wobble?
Also, as an engineer, you may be getting a stacked wobble, which of course is not a scientific term. But what I'm saying is if you have a tire carrier in your receiver, no mater how secure it may feel, there will be some movement, even if it's not physically able to felt, a calibrated instrument would be able to measure it. This will be cause by several things, e.g. material flexing, tolerance fit and finish, loads bearing on the carrier, etc.
Now take another item, in this case a bike carrier and attach it to the the receiver of the tire carrier. That bike carrier will also have some play in it due to the same causes mentioned above, no matter how little. Now stacking both of them together I'm not too surprised that you do feel a little wobble.
An example of what I'm talking about would be a train. Attach one car to the locomotive and from a dead stop to the engine moving the car will seem simultaneous. Now add 50 plus cars to the that engine and from a dead start have the locomotive start rolling. You will notice that there's a significant lag in time from when the engine with the first car moved to when finally the last car starts rolling. As tight and secure as train couplings are, there is still some "play" in them and when you stack that up, you'll see what happens!
