Hey guy former lurker first time poster here. I currently drive an 08 FJ manual. I’ve been looking into getting something with the legendary 2UZ-FE for quite a while. I found a 2007 that just had timing belt and water pump and spark plugs done. It’s definitely higher in price but considering the condition of the vehicle it is in immaculate condition. 160,000 no paint peel anywhere on the vehicle. I was just wondering at 18,000 is this robbery considering how clean the vehicle is and recent maintenance that has been done or does it sound reasonable?

Should I be concerned about paint peel? It doesn’t have any right now and I do like the white color. I want to make my decision soon cause I know ones this clean usually don’t last long.

Looks like an unicorn of a rig and cleaner than most 460s that are more than a couple years old.

IMO, $18K is GX460 money which gets you a stronger rear axle and 6 speed transmission. $18K also is 100 Series money can also get you an older (albeit high-mileage) 200 series. If you're set on a 470....and getting a super-clean unicorn example - then it may be worth $18K to you. But, it's not worth that to an average person who sees it as just another 17 year old SUV. So, if you did pay $18K for it, you'd potentially be underwater on Day 1 as the pool of people wiling to pay $18K for an older, mint rig like that is pretty darn small.

So, it's really up to you! If you want a unicorn 470 and are set on that, then by all means buy it as you may not ever find another that clean underneath. If you want something that's a bit cheaper to mod and wheel, I'd hold out for something in the $10-12K realm.

FYI, I'd personally offer $15-16K for it and would be ready to walk. I'd also feel terrible about wheeling in a time capsule like that.

@Rednexus I have looked at 100 series and 200 series both Toyota and Lexus within a 500 mile range of where I am and the 100 series always seem to have something that makes me hesitant whether it’s an accident or amount of owners. I haven’t come across anything quite as clean as this gx470 here. I really want the 2uz-fe as I know from the claims it’s one of the most durable and longest lasting motors Toyota has made. It’s a tough decision. I’d also have enough money to put down to where I wouldn’t be underwater. I appreciate your insight very much though.

I have an 06 in the same color and I would have no concerns about paint peel. The PO clearly took care of it and didn't neglect the paint. If you get it I would stay away from automatic car washes unless they are touchless. Also add some kind of sealant like a ceramic coating. That will do well to keep that pearl white paint protected and looking great. Do you wash your vehicles yourself?

18k for an old car with lots of miles. Frame looks great and the 470 is 10000000 times better looking than a 460. 2007 with Nav means you’re either getting one of those huge/ugly Chinese Tesla screens or you are paying well over $1k to do a proper non nav conversion (can take years to find correct part) or some mediocre solution like grom.
You’ll want new wheels and tires and a lift. And any vehicle this age will have some issues, they will pop up sooner or later.

Gx is a great ride but not for 20k+ imho(you’ll be over 20k fast even if you spend 16k). That being said, many people are happy to pay these prices so go for it if you love it.

Might be cheaper/more fun (if time allows) to travel to pickup a rig.

This is just a local FB Marketplace of 470s within 40 miles of me currently (just outside Sacramento, California).

I bought my 05 almost exactly 1 year ago for 9k with 192k miles.

Agreed, with that many miles, regardless of how well it was maintained, it will need new suspension components and exhaust manifolds at the minimum. Unless the PO already had both of those items fixed and documented - which given the condition is a possibility - but also unlikely as most owners don't' want to spend $3-4K on exhaust manifolds and then the same amount of money on a new OEM spec suspension. I can also see it needing HVAC servos, replacement driveshaft, wheel bearings, etc. Then there is the cost of modifying it.

It's super easy to have $30K dumped into one of these unless you keep them bone stock. I'm over that mark and my rig only cost $10,700 in 2020.

I purchased my 06 with 93k miles and identical in condition to the GX you're looking at and have spend $15k in maintenance/upgrades up to this point 3 years later and 50k more miles. I've also done a vast majority of the work myself. I'm sure I would tack on an additional $10-$15k if I took it to a shop every time.

If you want to wrench on your GX and enjoy keeping an awesome vehicle going and be rewarded for it then I say its worth it. If you aren't going to do most of the work yourself and enjoy the process then I wouldn't recommend the 470.

As a plus if you get the GX you can join the forum and share all your joys and heartbreak associated with your life choices. If you're married you can be like me and explain to your bride that you have one of the most reliable vehicles on the road one minute and then explain why the oh so reliable vehicles needs $5k in maintenance every year. 🤣😭

I'm probably a little late to this discussion, but here goes.

I bought my white GX a couple years ago. Pristine condition, but had a few more miles than yours (274k at time of purchase). CHECK THE ROOF. I didn't do this and discovered the paint peel afterwards. I knew about the issue when I bought it, but I'm in a unique position where my close friend paints cars for a living. As much as I like the white, I would have gone with a different color if I didn't have such a resource.

I know this isn't 2019, but back then I paid $16.5k for a 2007 with 89k miles. Today I would definitely be looking at a GX460 because the market for 470s is ridiculous. The GX460 will be newer and have even more aftermarket upgrades available if that's what you are looking for.

Idk man I just love the 470 styling. The cladding on the bottom doors and fenders that sticks out is classic Toyota to me. Reminds me of the 3rd gen 4runner and 80 series Land Cruiser. I just love that boxy cladding look. I’m not necessarily concerned about having the newest although some things certainly are nicer. There is something cool about driving an older rig. I like the 460 too but still prefer the lines of the 470. Rant over lol

I wouldn't worry about resale too much. That only matters if you are going to sell it. So, if you go for it, just be sure you really want it. The purchase price is just the beginning.

On any old vehicle you'll never get the money you put into maintenance / upgrades / repairs out when you sell anyways. This is why most people sell cars to begin with. Money dumped into repairs is money wasted unless the vehicle lasts long enough to justify the costs, and nothing additional goes wrong in the interim.

These are not just SUV’s, the are luxury SUV’s and nicer than most (although a little dated). If you can find a clean lower miles one, which can be hard to find, they are smooth rigs.
I picked up my ‘04 two years ago with 130k on it, which I feel is low miles for 18(!) years old.
It drives like new.
If you you build it up it is a competent Luxury 4wd (awd). It kills any fuel mileage you might have.
The V8 is smooth but lower powered compared to many modern suv’s (and V8’s especially).
Non stock kills resale.
Enjoy it. Built up or stock.
Mine is white also, like sh!t ton of 4runners. Its a clean color.

Bought my '06 white GX mainly to tow behind my motorhome which I did for a couple years. Now it stays at my mountain cabin and is my everyday driver there. Which is only a couple miles at 20mph on dirt roads. And some forest service trails. I do take it on the highway occasionally to the post office, about 30 miles at 60mph. Since it's either dusty or muddy I don't wash it. It fits in the neighborhood nicely. It has a 2.5" lift.

2 problem areas I am aware of. Paint peeling and the door speakers. Check the paint right above the windshield. It really looks nice. One of
the best Toyota engines made.
