from wiki....

The VM Motori 2.8 L straight-4 common rail turbodiesel, became available in CRD branded 2005–2006 Sport and Limited models (2004 in the UK). The diesel utilized a variable geometry turbocharger and generated 160 horsepower (120 kW) and 295 lb·ft (400 N·m) of torque. The overbuilt nature of the diesel powerplant added nearly 200 pounds (91 kg) to the CRD's curb weight versus the gasoline model. DaimlerChrysler introduced the CRD to gauge the marketability of diesel engines in North America; diesels are already common in Europe. The Liberty was also the first Jeep vehicle to use rack and pinion steering.[10]

Thanks Sporin, you beat me to it.

"As a platfrom for diesel viability"...yeah to bad they did it on a crappy platform. If they would have done it in the Wrangler it would have been a different story. They did put it in the Cherokee eventually didn't they. I thought that was a 3.0L though.

No offense against the platform. Just saying it isn't as popular amongst those who would actually want one like the wrangler would be. Actually considered a few weeks back on seeing if you were interested in a trade as we are looking for a diesel SUV. Just can't do that small of a vehicle and well a JEEP!!! Haha.

Good luck and it does seem like a decent price considering the few diesels there are to chose from out there. I'm guessing that is a Powerstroke Exursion in the background. Do you like it? That is sorta on the table for us as well but would replace my truck and her car all in one and get to keep out cruiser.

How is the fuel economy on your Jeep? I've read mixed reviews but most stated they were fairly dismal considering it was a diesel. I just don't see how something that small could get what an Exursion nearly gets? I'm thinking it just can't be true.

Thanks Jason. Having the CRD was enough for me to go for a Jeep. It's a sweet engine. But, things changed and we needed something bigger, so the X replaced the Jeep. Yes it's a 7.3L Excursion 4x4, bought from a fellow mudder in Colorado. It's the wife's and we absolutely love it. She doesnt want anything else, not even a Land Cruiser! Well, perhaps a HZJ77, but highly unlikely in this country.

Why couldn't you have gotten a stick? :( In austin too..

Yeah, I hear ya. The CRD was only mated to an automatic though. A manual tranny wasn't an option for diesel.

Lowered price

update price, trades considered, especially for anything diesel related

sunday bump. fuel is going up, would make a good commuter while the cruiser is a weekend warrior

According to Fueleconomy.gov the 2006 Jeep Liberty/Cherokee 4WD 4 cyl, 2.8 L, Automatic 5-spd, Diesel Gets 19 City 23 Highway, combined 21 MPG,

According to people that submit mileage it goes, 18 low, 29 High Average overall 22.2 MPG based on 20 submissions.

Check Fueleconomy.gov to see all the results. Hope that helped. I'm sure it's all dependent on where you live, how you drive, etc.

I get 19-23 with a ratio of 70/30 city/highway respectively. As usual, there are tweaks to improve this.

This little 4 cylinder can pull though. When I bought my 40, I towed it from Dallas to Austin and couldn't tell it was back there. It was the only time I towed. The towing capacity is 5000 in the US and 6500-7000 in Europe. I dont recall exactly what it is in Europe, but we're a little more conservative in the US.

Just took it to San Antonio last weekend towing a small trailer. Grabbed a FJ40 tub and some rims. Not much of a load, but man, this thing purred. Gets at least 10 more mpg than your cruiser.

Price reduced in post 1. When comparing cars, remember that this has the 100K TB done and a full bumper to bumper warranty. No dealer fee BS. That's about 3K in savings.
