As indicated in other posts, I am in the process of purchasing an 06 Land Cruiser. The purchase is through a dealer and they are offering an extended warranty option. It's pricey, but I am financing a large portion of the cost and am wondering whether the extended warranty is a good idea? Any major components prone to failure after several years of use?

Who is the warranty through...Toyota or 3rd party?

If it's a Toyota Warranty it's worth considering. Any other 3rd party warranty and it's worthless.

AHC is the one thing to be concerned about with the 06-07, however I think it is improved over the older 01-02 Lexus version.

If your LX has a documented service history and has followed Lexus recommended service then you don't need the coverage. How many miles on the LX? Have you taken the vin to your local Lexus dealer and gone over the service history with a service advisor to see what has been done over time? Have you had it looked at by Lexus tech or your tech? Is it a Lexus warranty? Tell us the answer to these questions and also the cost and the name of the warranty and warranty company. Then you will get some value able answers

This 06 is a land cruiser, not LX. It is, however, being sold at a Lexus dealership. They haven't offered details on warranty provider or cost yet. It was only mentioned during our discussions. I've sent them a deposit, but have not finalized.

Fortunately it does not have AHC or a DVD player. Mileage is low 40s. Supposedly it has been checked out mechanically by Lexus tech and all looks good.

No AHC? An extended warranty would be a waste of your money.

I am not a fan of extended warranties for an inherently reliable vehicle.
However, my wife got a Toy ext war when she bought her 03 and we got our money's worth probably out of it. Doesn't take much at Toy dealer's prices. But of course, I (not she) would not have gone there if we didn't have the warranty so it's a bit of a less than fully-convincing argument. Bottom line is I would not have done it myself but my wife liked the idea and probably still does.

One thing, though, if you do plan on getting one would be to check whether it covers the nav sys electronics or not. Ours didn't IIRC, it was not the top level. And of course a failure of the navsys screen or electronics could get pricey.

I used to think extended warranties were worth the money, but after owning a Tacoma, 4runner, LC, and Honda Accord, I'll never buy an extended warranty again. ACH may be different, but take my wife's Accord for example...we've owned it for 3 years and are paying $50/month for extended warranty. That's $1800 so far that we have paid in. We have not used it yet, and we get all of the money back at the end of the 5 year period (when requested on time). Other than getting it back, I can never see myself spending 2k or more on repairs, short of a catestrophic failer, which I'm willing to risk. Just my thoughts.

I just purchased a 2004 TLC with 70K miles from a local Toyota dealer. Although I would generally never consider an extended warranty (which is, in fact, a service agreements and not a warranty - an important difference legally) I went ahead and purchsed Toyota's VSA. The term of coverage is 5years/60K miles. It wasn't cheap but the service history on the vehicle is not very clear despite the CarFax and spotty dealer service records - I have no way of knowing if the PO followed the service/maintenance schedule properly. And I'm somewhat concerned about the NAV system which could cost upwards of $5K to replace if fails entirely. Plus I'm deploying to Afghanistan next January and I want my wife to be able to take the vehicle to dealer and let it repair the (covered) problem with a minimum of hassle, etc. I really could go either way on the issue, but I think it's worth it given my particular situation.

Hadn't thought about nav failure. I appreciate it being pointed out as a consideration. Guess when we get to the point of discussing the extended warranty (hopefully tomorrow) I'll consider these things relative to the cost. Also sounds like if it is not a Toyota warranty, probably should pass on it.

Thanks everyone.

If you purchase the warranty, make sure you don't buy it at whatever face value they state. In case you aren't aware, you can haggle the price of the warranty like you haggled the price of the truck. Not many people actually do this, but it is possible. They mark this up as well.

well, some of those non-Toyota warranties are probably legit and OK having in principle but the hard part is finding out which. With the Toy one -double check that it is, some info on MUD- you are reasonably sure they will honor it.

Don't worry too much about the Navsys, though, there are very very few reports here of problems and it can probably be fixed for much less than the cost of a new OEM one.

Another thing to remember, owners that have problems with their rigs go to the Internet and post the problem. Most owners that don't have a problem don't go on the Internet and post. So any problem is magnified, odds are your warranty is going to cost you many times more then any problem you might have. Save your money and use it for maintance.

Appreciate all the thoughts on the warranty. Went ahead and purchased one (a Toyota 5 year 60,000 mile warranty that starts at my purchase). Yes, they took me for a ride on the cost of it. I've never bought a vehicle without inspecting in person, and am a little apprehensive about doing so. Having the warranty gives me a little piece of mind. I don't have any major mods planned so no worries on voiding the warranty. (Note I didn't say no mods, just no major mods.). Honestly, I hope I never need it.

or... do use it as much as you can (well, assuming there is no big deductible, and the repairs are well done). For every little thing that goes bad. And be sure it's all well-documented in writing. Cuz repairs done at the dealer will carry a warranty themselves that -I imagine- may extend beyond this 5 year warranty if done towards the end. Also a good idea to have them record anything you have doubts about before it expires, even if not fixed then.

I hear you e9999. There was a time when I always purchased extended warranties with our vehicles, but haven't done so recently (until this one).

We live very rural and its not uncommon for both my wife and I (in separate vehicles) to drive up to ~1000 miles per week. In fact, for several years my commute to work alone was 200 miles per day. Unless my wife decides this Land Cruiser is hers (which is highly possible) it will not be a DD. So I do not expect for it to see those types of miles. With that said, South Texas is hard on vehicles and having not seen it in person or know the service history, buying the warranty just seemed like a good idea.

But yes, it will be at the dealer for anything that doesn't appear to be in proper working order.

Looking forward to being part of this community again.

Watch your sun roof, They are very expensive and are not repairable if its the track system. That alone will probably pay for getting the warranty. Mike
