I know it's not a Volkswagen forum. For my wife I am considering a 2005 Jetta TDI with 180,000 km on it. Anyone here familiar with the model and specifically the TDI? Just wondering what I should look for.

My wife has a 2005 TDi Jetta she bought new. It's been a great car, no real trouble to speak of. Only has 115,000 km on it so far though.
The turbos can coke up and need cleaning. Some pumpe duse motors have had some cam bearing issues IIRC, do a quick search and read.

Those cars get great mileage (the 5 speeds are even better), have plenty of power, and are really nice to drive. I like them a lot.

Just don't be expecting spectacualr clean emission results.......

Says the guy with the 6000 pound SUV with a turbo diesel and 3" (straight?) exhaust :grinpimp:
Dieselgate doesn't kick in till 2009 model year (so far, at least).

You cheap Dutch slum lord bastard. Just dig up one of those coffee cans full of gold Guilders buried in one of your many back yards! Tough car- I rented a TDI sedan, similar year and drove it to Vegas and back.. Dented the oil pan, tore off all underbody plastic, deployed 3 of the air bags, etc. etc. Didn't skip a beat. Thank god for platinum visa rental insurance...

We had a brand new off the showroom floor 05 Passat wagon that we traded straight across for our lx450. It ate two autos at 5g a pop . Get a standard.

That's what you get for letting Lance drive.... :grinpimp:

That dieselgate refers to onboard software that detected an emission test procedure, and cut NOx and PM during the procedure - when the software detected no test being conducted the NOx/PM restrictions were relaxed providing better power and economy for the vehicle's owner.

I've seen him drive the 190e rhd Benz, it was a nice car. He fxxx the bumper on that one by himself thank you.

Jesus lance- partaking in 'controlled substances' and posting again? Get some nice cooling 'Tucks' or something and chill...

2005 has the PD engine, some had cam problems as stated above. Other than that a good engine. The automatic transmissions in them did not like abuse, the standards are bullet proof. I have the ALH engine which was the generation before the PD, the ALH engines are bullet proof. Mine has a stage 2 Mark Malone tune in it, larger injectors, bigger turbo, Bilstien coil overs and after market sway bars get it around corners. It is also corner balanced. They are great cars, who gives a crap if VW played with the ECU to get a few more ponies out of them and a few more miles per Kilometer. My BJ 70 pours out more smoke that any VW that I have seen.

So 1999 to 2004 has the ALH engine?

2003 was the last year of the alh engines. We own a 2001 jetta sedan that's my work, beater car. Manual windows, no sun roof, 5 speed. Averages around 42-48, depending on how much highway time there is. We also live in the mountains at 9500' . My wife drives a fully loaded, every option that was available but the 5 disc changer, 2003 jetta wagon, that we bought new. I converted hers to a 5 speed. I added a South Bend clutch, egr delete and a kerma tuner when I did the conversion. Hers blows the doors off off of mine. We love these cars. Start in the winter, do great with snow tires on. Just look for an 03 with a 5 speed.

I also have a 2000 golf Alh model five speed, should of done the EGR delete when I did the T-Belt...after looking on a couple web sites it seems to be discontinued by a few companies. 370K and runs like new, suspension is pretty bagged.
