I have a 2004 V6 Tacoma 'Xtra-cab', TRD/SR5 package with 7,800 miles on it. It was apparently driven hard for about a year when it was new, got mudwhomped and then took a blow to the left rear. It was bought at auction and the guy straightened the frame tail and put a new bed on it and repainted it. It was moved in and out of his auto shop for the next 6 years, he figures out he's not going to fix it, and then I get the brainy idea to buy it. The first thing we managed to fix was the O2 sensor wires which were sheared underneath near the sensor on the tailpipe, and the rear diff lock wires were broken under the drivers seat. These items have been fixed, but there are a number of other nagging problems on this truck, including:

- The 3rd brake light, the one over the cab, is powered when the truck is turned off, and turns off when you put your foot on the brake pedal. Can't pass the CA state lamps and brakes inspection with this malfunctioning.

- The air bag sensor stays on when the truck is running. The dash and air bag units do not appear to have been deployed; apparently something is flagging the air bag computer during its computer routine at startup.

- The ABS light stays on. When performing a manual check of the computer, it flashes the ABS light 3 times, and then 2 times, and repeats....

- Seat belt flashes all the time. Found two cut wires under the drivers seat and connected them to the seat sensor. Both wires on the seat side of the connector were black, so I don't know if there is something different I can do there??

Other than these "minor" problems, the rest of the truck seems sound and I think it has the potential to last a good long time. I'm feeling over my head with these particular items, and any knowledge I can find to correct these issues would be most appreciated.

I guess I've either somehow posted inappropriately on the site, or I've landed on a topic that nobody cares to share their knowledge about???? Have had 80 looks, but no ideas??? I promise, whatever I learn I'll share, cause I expect to be working on this truck for a long time!!!

I haven't a clue. It may prove worth while to invest in some sort of DTC reader to deal with the dash lights.

I've been working my way thru the manual, but will have to keep working it to figure it out

What is a DTC Reader. I have an engine computer reader, but no codes are active. Is there another system tester that I should know about??
