Hi,

I am planning to tow 8.5ft x 16ft enclosed car trailer. The car weight is around 3400 lbs. Is it safe to do it?
Any info will be greatly appreciate.

Thank's,
AW

I think you will be fine.

Things to watch would be the weight on your towball which will depend on the balance of the load on the axles of the trailer, the load distribution hitch etc. In Australia it is mandatory to have trailer brakes (usually Ebrakes). That would be highly recommended.

Depending on the load the vehicle is carrying otherwise (other than the trailer - passengers, luggage, fuel etc) the AHC might end up overloaded and default back to L. Even then, it would still be a safe ride if it was highway driving.

Get a weight distribution hitch. When your tote exceeds 50% of you tow vehicle's maximum tow capacity, you need a WDH. Given that it is an enclosed trailer, I would also recommend looking at one with sway control capability.

I am in the midst of purchasing a trailer right now and have been doing a bunch of reading, so I thought I would add my $0.02. Take a look on the web regarding the use of a WDH. It might help you with your efforts.

Does your '03 LX have AHC? How much do you anticipate the enclosed trailer to weight?

It's actually recommended in the manual NOT to use a WDH with AHC.

Having towed with a heavy uhaul carrier with two different vehicles, the LX tows with aplomb with incredible stability. I never once had a hint of sway even cruising at 75 passing big rigs. Though a enclosed trailer will likely get buffeted more. While the wheelbase isn't incredibly long, the hundy does have the benefit of weight and a wide track.

The AHC is a great system, always keeping the car level. I seriously question the many people that rip it out, without knowing it's incredible flexibility and benefits.

Recent 450 mile trip over some serious 6-7% grades. With probably over 1000 hitch weight with the rear engined 911.

My last car was a couple hundred pound heavier than the P-car, but towed great nevertheless.

My 2003 LX470 is still on AHC.
I am not sure the weight of the enclosed trailer. The size is 8.5ft x 16ft made by Interstate. I think it is approximately 3200lbs.
The car that I am towing is Toyota Supra MKIV.

I just got the hitch ball with 7500 lbs rating.

Appreciate very much for all your response.
