Hey all,

I may have a deal on a Toyota original nav screen out of a 4Runner... original in the box...

...the nature of the deal is such that I would be stupid NOT to buy it.

Anyone installed one in a 4th Gen 4Runner (Though I suppose it would be the same as any other Toy that has the nav optional -- Sequoias, Camry, Siennas, etc) which was not originally equipped with NAV???

I don't have the JBL stereo, just the plain-jane Toyota Head unit that came in the '03 SR5 4Runners.

Does the nav system head unit use an external amplifier to drive the speakers? If so, can you use any generic off the shelf amp, or does it have to be a Toyota amp? Where does Toyota hide the GPS antenna?

The cost of this Nav unit would be the same as a bluetooth GPS system for my Nokia e61 -- so if I have a choice between a 6-7" screen and factory fit and finish compared to a 2.5" screen with the Nokia suction-cupped to the dash somplace, I'd rather go with the factory unit. :) And since the 4Runner is the road-warrior and the wife's and my long trip vehicle, I'd really like to keep the interior clean and clutter-free. If I get it, when I install it, I'll also take the opportunity to hardwire in the XM satellite radio unit so we don't have to use the FM modulator anymore.

Thanks in advance,
Fred

since you dont have JBL, it should pop in easily. The silver trim piece is different on the JBL's. As long as yours "bevels" in to the radio, it will be a clean install.
There is some wiring hookup, but there are good writeups out there, not a difficult install.

gps antenna can be mounted inside the dash just behind the nav unit or out on the dash, you should play w/ it to see where you get good reception.

Here is a good read on the install (be warned it is LONG)

Thanks for the link -- looks pretty exhaustive.

I'm hoping the install goes well. I'll probably wait till it warms up a bit before I try it though. Nothing worse than wrenching in an unheated garage when it's below freezing. It's bad enough when it's a necessity, but when it's a mod that can wait for fairer weather....

I've alwasy wanted to do this but could never fine a good enough deal on the unit.....:frown:
