G'day everyone,
First time poster, please be gentle.
I'm looking for an opinion on the oil leak which is developing on my mighty (unfortunately non turbo) 1HZ powered 79.
There is oil leaking/seeping around under the front of the bell housing, see pictures. I cannot see the source and was wondering if those more technically adept could offer an opinion.
I'm not the greatest photographer but hopefully you can make some sense of the pictures.
Awesome site and thanks for checking out my post.

My educated guess is that your rear main seal is leaking. It's the one on the back of the crankshaft.

Can you tell if it's engine oil of gearbox oil? I've also seen the input shaft leak due to a failed spigot bearing but this is uncommon.

I'm with locked it's the main seal leaking so time to pull the gearbox and replace and while your in there you might as well replace the clutch, spigot bearing and have the flywheel resurfaced.

Thanks guys, yes it is engine oil.
Unfortunately I haven't got an amazing shed like you Locked or your incredible skills, the freakin' Frankencruiser lurking in your shed has blown me away.
Ozcruiser, love the rare and beautiful well back ute.
So it'll be off to the shop for someone qualified to do the spanner twirling.
Thanks again for your time and help, so glad to have found ih8mud.
Cheers
Alan

Clean it up and see if you can pin point it. The best shops to contact are gearbox reconditoners that do a lot of landcruisers. They have the gear/experience and can save you time

Did you ever confirm that it was the rear main seal? My 105-series has a leak in the same place (see photo below). I'll clean it up tomorrow to try to pinpoint, hoping it's just the rocker cover gasket.

It does look like a rear mains. Try some power steering reconditioner in with your engine oil. It will soften the rubber seal, takes 1500klms to work(if it does work).
