At least I think that's what they said it was called.

At any rate, mine is apparently bad. The 4Runner will shift into 4WD, but only if I'm going about 5mph or so. I'm told this is about a $1400 job to replace the unit.:bang:

So, any advice on having this done? I do oil changes and that is about the extent of my ability and time.

While the diff is out, which is why they say it costs so much, anything I should have done at the same time?

Thanks, and I look forward to being a part of the forum. I'm pretty new to Toyota's, and I don't do the hard core off-road stuff, but I love trail riding and such.

I just did a swap of IFS front diffs between my '99 and '02. Def a ton of work to get those diffs in and out. Is that price *including* the new actuator? Sounds about right to me if it includes the new actuator--it's def a lot of coin though. If you've ever thought about re-gearing the diffs, this would be the tmie to do it--though that'll run ya another $800-1000. Only other thing I can think of that could maybe be done at the same time is new axle seals and/or fix any IFS diff related leaks. Check the CVs are still good as well.

Edit: Just noticed your ability and time comment. This is quite more involved both technically and timely. So I'll just leave this info in here for future reference.

FWIW, if you have access to tools and shop space, it's not the hardest job in the world, just very time consuming and pretty much requires two people to actually pull the diff out of position and to get it back in position (And as much as I hated doing mine and said I'd never do it again, if my actuator failed, I would do it again. :P ) Actually replacing the actuator once the diff is out is a prety easy job. Remove 4 bolts, break the insta-gasket seal, and pull out. Putting the new one in is the reverse of that. Just make sure to line the fork up with the lock sleeve.

Yep, the price includes the parts. I definitely would not attempt that work.

Switching out diffs is not a bad as you might think. Aside from messing with the CV boots it's all nuts and bolts. Used IFS diffs can be had pretty cheap. Grab a friend and make a day of it. I have a used one from an auto tranny (4:30 gearing) for sale and there are a bunch of others with these sitting around from SACs.;)
