Hi all, excessive fuel use question. Up until about Jan/Feb fuel use in my 2001 auto kzj95r Prado had been around 10.5 to 12.5 per 100 depending on driving style. Then, within the space of a tank or 2 it sky-rocketed to as high as 16.5 per.
Only thing changed/done to vehicle in that time was attempt to adjust the handbrake.
Have since fully reversed the adjustments done to handbrake. Have also given full service including fuel filter, and have fitted new injectors. Have also checked brakes for sticking/grabbing callipers.
Best economy I can achieve now is a steady 13.5 per driving like an old man, not loaded.

Anyone got any suggestions as to were to look next?

Cheers

Have you tried changing the air filter? (the air filter would be a bigger factor in fuel consumption than a fuel filter) Checked the tyre pressure? Crushed exhaust pipe?(scraping the barrel now)
Ive seen the electronic brain on the fuel injection pump cause problems , but usually the symptoms are quite severe.
Increased fuel use would normally come with black smoke.

Hey, yeah checked all of those things, multiple times now!
The boa k smoke is the weird part. From what I can see whilst driving, there is none. And having jumped approximately 4 litres per hundred, you would think there would be a considerable amount.

Also scraping the barrel, but do you think it could be timing? I replaced the timing belt last year, and this issue didn't arise until quite some time after doing that, but I'm getting desperate now

If it was bad timing the problem would have been apparent straight away. The belt could have jumped a few teeth, you could check that.
Using extra fuel would also be pushing the EGT's up

A few years back I saw a few owners with similar problems. The only fix was to take the injection pump to Toyota who would give you a rebuilt/exchange one for $2500AUD. At the time , they were the only ones who could repair the electronic part that controls the pump. I believe that is no longer the case and the price has dropped, but it still wouldnt be cheap.
