Can anyone tell me how to get the tail-gate section of the tail/reverse-light lens off from the tail-gate itself?

Does the carpet come up? the only screws I see are for the locking mechanism.

I'm probably missing something simple - trying to replace those lights...

LX470Pilot. Real carefully, take a screwdriver or a body panel puller preferably, and pry at the corner of the carpeting. There are many clips that just pop into the holes on the tailgate. Just go around the whole thing and pop each clip out. You have to be careful not to tear the crappy soft plyable material the carpeting is mounted on.

Once you get the carpeting off, there are 3 screws holding a plate in on each side of the vehicle. I would suggest changing EVERYTHING since you are already in there.

You will need two 7443 bulbs for the brake lights plain white bulbs
and you will need two 7440 bulbs, you can put hyper white bulbs in if you want, but it doesnt add any more light, only deminishs it.

Hope this helps.

2000 TLC has simple friction popper fasteners around the edge.

If you look at the pic of the liftgate with carpetted trim removed, you can see the slightly recessed holes around the periphery. There are about 16 of them....? Slide a blade right up against each fastener and pry.

Like LoudLX says, the trim is carpeting over cardboard. Go slow.

And don't remove the screws to the release lever.

You don't need to touch those to get the trim off.

Whoopee! That previous post just bumped me to Junior status.

So I'm gonna bump this old thread because I've gotten to this point. removed the three screws and the plate, then removed the 2 bolts on the light fixture...but then what? Help please! Thanks!
