Hey,

I am new to the forums here and I found this website on the back of a new FJ rig rolling down the highway. I just purchased a 2000 4runner SR5. I have always wanted one and the 3rd gen is probably my favorite so far over all. Need some help figuring out what to do next with the Toyo. I would like to put larger tires on it for more grip off road and on, but as of right now I would also like to leave the suspension stock. I have peered onto some websites via google and have read that 31/1050/15's will clear, but after looking at them, they look pretty big. Will they clear without rubbing or causing any other problems? I am wanting to do some occasional easy to moderate trail riding here in the southeast. The smokey's or the blue ridge seem very tempting. Any recommendations on tires to start out with will be very helpful. Size and brand.

Also I have seen some of the 4runners with a black spoiler over the top rear brake light on the rear door. After some research I have read that it helps out with redirecting air and keeping the exhaust smell out of the truck when all the windows are down at cruising speeds. I have searched all over the web and cannot seem to find one anywhere OEM or aftermarket. Any thoughts on this?

Thank you,

Here is my thought on tires/suspension etc.

You dont need larger tires or a suspension lift to go most places that most people go. If you are going to do rocks or heavy heavy trails, then sure.

I have used stock suspensions and same size Mud Terrains to go places that most would cringe. I have done this in Jeeps, Toyota pickups and Land Cruisers.

Knowing the vehicle and how to navigate terrain are key.

So, go buy another set of same size tires in a Mud type pattern and have at it. That truck will take you wherever you want to go in stock form. I promise.

31's should fit and you might want to check to see if you dont already have them. They were stock on many Toyotas after 95-or at least close to 31's.

Thank you for the reply. I currently have 225/75/15's on my truck as of now. If my math is right I believe that equals out to be a tire that is 8.8in wide and roughly 28in in diameter. I am having trouble finding any sort of tire that has good grip in that size. Do you or anyone else think it would help increasing the width of the tire or know of any good brands to recommend? Or possibly a tire size somewhere in the middle of 31/1050/15 and stock?

Thank you

A 245 or 255 /75 would be OK.

Or just stick with that size and replace with some AT's. I like Nittos myself but have run all sorts.

On my last Toyota pickup, I ran Mastercraft AT's and they got me through all sorts of terrain. Mind you, not thick mud. That is why I also ran a set of 31x10.50 BFG Mud Terrains.

I actually have the Mud Terrains for sale. They are in excellent shape-only used for hunting season. I cant use a 15" tire any more since I bought my new truck.

Lift Options

If you are interested in lift options then google ToyTec Lifts. They have a number of lift options from $$ to $$$$. For a good ride on and off road with a mild front lift I've been considering the Bilstien 5100 adjustable front shocks that can give you up to 2.5 inches of lift depending on how you adjust them. This would give you a little more room for larger tires to move.

I appreciate the feedback guys. Anything else that you can think of to get my truck in a condition to have a little fun with?

I am looking at getting a Yakima basket for my 4runner. I have been looking everywhere and I can't decide between the load warrior and mega warrior on my 2000 4runner. Any thoughts?

I got mine off craigs list, it is a small one, load warrior. It is nice though for what I paid for it. If I had to do it again, I would look around for something cheaper. Costco had something, no name brand for less.
One thing that is nice, my target duffle roof bag fits nicely in it, with shovel, and jerry can.
You do not want much weight up there so, maybe the smaller one.

BTW, you do not want too wide of a tire as you will not get much traction. research this issue here Expeditions West: Tire Selection for Expedition Travel

and here is another forum your wife/girlfriend wil consider truck porn...

Well for my daily driver, the black 99 Runner we have the factory sized P265/70R16's Michelin LTX M/S. Most Runners have the 16 inch rims locally and the odd runner has the 15 inch rims.

On my 96 I ran a set of LT235/85R16's Michelin LTX M/S for a long time..32 inch tire by 9.5 wide I think they are. Load Range E 10 ply.The extra height offers a bit more clearance on the trails..
.. but then I chose a set of BFGoodrich MudTerrain KM2's LT245/75R16 for better traction. I really considered a taller tire for clearance but chose the smaller tire because our 96 has the 2.7L engine and the mountains are a 3 hour trip down the highway from home here. I am really quite surprised at how quiet these are on pavement for the lugs that are on them and they bite in the dirt great. Obviously ice road traction will be compromised. That's why I bought an extra set of steel rims for the KM2's and put them on when we get away from the pavement :)
No 1 tire does it all....

The '99&'00 4Runners sat the highest stock out if all the 3rd gen, the OP should ve using the stock 265/70-16 tires if he has upgraded to the '16 rim.
