I've got a 95 1/2 Tacoma with auto-lockers. Recently it takes as much as 1/4 mile to transfer from 2 to 4H or back after engaging the shift stick. What's the most likely culprit?

That model doesn't have hubs... Or Auto hubs, or hubs that lock or hubs that unlock...

That model has a switch in the front diff that "locks" 4WD in or out...

You should not have to drive any to get it to unlock. My feeling is that you think you do and are simply relieving any pressure or load that has built up on the collar so the sillynoid or motor can pull it back...

Same sorta goes for going from 2H to 4H. The splines must mesh b/f it can slide over.

.................

2x on what Hilux said.
It can't disengage or engage if there is a load being applied.
Maybe try going in the reverse direction to dis/engage the 4 wheel drive.
This reversal of direction may not be required but usually will unload the mechanism and allow the solenoid to do it's work in a shorter driving distance.
Let us know what happens!

Do the current generation Tacomas have the same locking mechanism?
