Hi guys,
I'm wanting to upgrade my 1PZ SWB 70 engine with a AXT turbo kit giving 40% more torque and power according to their specs.
I have a R151F gearbox with the pto for the winch connected behind it.
What I need to know is should I change to the H151 with the extra power and will the pto simply bolt on?
Lots of conflicting stories about position of the gear levers on the web. Whats the right story?

I would stick with the R151 at least until it gets tired. If you get a H151, you need one from a 7* series. Im a bit foggy on it now, but I think its something to do with the driving positions. If you used a 100 series H151 in a 7*, the gearstick would be too far forward and be poking out from under your dash. I remember someone in NSW bought the wrong gearbox for his 7* series and ended up selling it because it wouldnt work.
I think you can use 80 series transmissions with some mods.
There are some upgraded main shafts for the R151 to beef them up.

The R151 should be fine, if anything I would rebuild it with some quality upgrades from Marlin Crawler. It would probably be easier than fitting in a H151.

I have had a rebuilt R151 behind my 1HD for the last year with no issues.

The R151 got a bad rap in Australia because they were used in the mining and hire industry. Private owners tended to get higher klms out of them. They wont outlast the other Landcruiser boxes , but its far easier and cheaper to leave the R151 where it is.

Marlin is currently rebuilding 3 R151's for me; one will be behind a turbo 1HZ, they do fine with quality parts. There is a reason Toyota is still building 79 series trucks with this transmission.

Sorry to be that guy, but all the V8 70 series here have the H152 transmission, and prior to the 2017 MY they had the H150.

In some markets they are still selling the 1HZ with the R151

I thought that had stopped with the my17 and gone to a non-intercooled 1VD with around 135 kw

Should have been more specific, most markets where you can still get a 70 series with a 1HZ. Areas like the Middle East and Africa. The V8 was a whole other beast.

Not all countries have emission laws and in many developing countries, the poor state roads dictate that a 1HZ is as fast as you need.
And of course, the unit cost is much cheaper using old technology.
You can even get a 79 series with fold down windscreen and removeable roof for some markets that mount cannons in the back.
