Anyone know much about these, ever rebuild/serviced/replaced one? Im assuming it is gear driven off the timing gears?

Mine seems to be leaking fluid from the pump housing. After hearing horror stories from 80 series owners about gear driven power steering pumps seizing and killing engines I thought I should get mine sorted asap!

Is it an easy job to remove and rebuild?

I havent done one but it looks simple enough. The only problem you can get is the p/s shaft can get grooves in them but this is usually on old outback landcruisers that have done big klms.

You can get the kits from ebay quite cheap, they are very similar to the 1HZ and 1HD T pumps.

It comes off easy,it has 3 bolts and 2 hoses, you need to drain the fluid 1st.
I dumped mine at a power steering specialist,in/out for $150.
I havent heard these stories about seized pumps, but they must have let the pump keep going without maintenance for long time with it screaming its head off.
They are a really good design IMO.

Are you sure its not leaking from the pressure hose, try cleaning it up and see where it leaks from. Might just need a new o ring and retightening.
The feed hose from the reservoir also leak and can make a mess with the rad fan blowing it everywhere.

They are pretty simple units, as roscoFJ73 said, clean and check joints for leaks..
Also the reservoirs leak at a joint where the top is joined to the bowl...Common problem on the 80 series too.
I have had mine out and changed the vanes in it and orings (was leaking) many years ago...
Heres a pic

Mine seems to be leaking from the centre of the pump itself so Im assuming Ive got a seal on the way out. Its not a bad leak, there is no noticeable drop in the fluid level in the reservoir I only noticed due to the dark patch in the mud coating after my last off road adventure.

Ill look into getting a seal kit then.

That one would be the big o ring where the 2 main parts of the housing join
