Found a nice evaluation of the two engines - looks like it came out of a Toyota manual.

Looks like torque on the 1hd-t kicks in hard around 1500 rpm.

this was in the 99' supplement regarding engine upgrades to the 1HZ/1HD, mostly the heads were 'improved' for emissions

Well the forum talk on the interballs says mechanics report that the number of turboed 1HZ failures increased significantly post 99. The factory 1hz-t was designed for the pre99 head, it has a different part number that is discontinued but Toyota's replacement part number for it is that of the 1HZ, so differences must have been insignificant
