Ay everyone, I've started a rebuild on a spare 1hz that I bought and I'm wandering where to get stronger internal parts to handle a turbo, I'm in Perth. And also what's a good turbo to suit, I love the whistle hahah

Yes, there are upgraded pistons available as the stock 1HZ units are not the strongest things around. You will be looking for Alfin Pistons and rings - they are stronger and have inserts to prevent ring land degradation. TO fit them, you'll want a top end (VRS) gasket sets.

Contact Roodogs in Melbourne and talk to Trevor or Neil.

If you have the time, money, and inclination, a boost compensator is a good idea. I'm sure there's an injection shop locally to you that can talk to about it. It's not needed, but it will make a difference with the fueling to reduce smoke at low boost, low RPM.

Other than that, keep the boost and EGTs within an acceptable range and you'll be fine.

Ring Travis at Engines Australia in Welshpool. The only parts available are stronger pistons. The engine is the same down below as the factory turbo engines, except for the conrods

cheers guys, so youd use stock 1hz bearings and conrods, just change the pistons and head gasket? oh and boost compensator

Yep,but most people use the ACL bearings which seem to have a better standing than Toyotas big end bearings.
Although I had my 1HZ checked at 200000klms and they were perfect

Engines Aust sent me a new products email yesterday informing me they had 1HZ Turbo pistons with ceramic coating and moly teflon something or other and Alfin inserts.
Whether they are an improvement over the old ones or just the same ,I do not know.
Worth asking about though.

Yeah cheers man I'll have to ask. Any good machine shops around and do you know of any good turbos to suit the build??

Gturbo

Graeme bentink turbos, just search him on here

I dunno I thought it'd be fun to do up a 1HZ. If I did it I'd want to go the distance with a 1HD-FT head with the 1HZ block for better compression numbers and converting to direct injection. With my budget however I think a low km 1HZ is what I'd be looking at

Ive always had good service from Hine Motors in Nedlands, but they have changed hands now.

Also is it worth it to rebuild a 1hz vs just buying a low km one?

Low klm 1HZ are almost unobtanium and when you find one, they want big dollars and it will most likely be out of a rolled over mine vehicle.
I had one rebuilt, with a rebuilt pump and it was fantastic, just like a new engine.
I sold it after 40000klms,but I know if the new owner looks after like I did,it will be good for another 30 years.

yeah I am just a bit curious.
My 75 has 263,000 miles or 425,000kms. Runs great.
If it came down to needing a new one I guess I would have to punch numbers and weigh outcomes.

You would need to factor in a full pump/injector rebuild, water pump, machining of the manifolds(they get way out of whack),timing belt, power steering pump.
Vac pump will outlast the engine several times over.
I spent close on $10k but I also bought a new AC compressor ,rebuilt the starter and bought a new 120a alternator.
Most rebuilders in oz include a new aftermarket head these days rather than rebuilding the old head.

What sort of turbos does he sell? And how much work is it to convert the 1hz to the direct injection one??

If you're looking for a turbo, I'd suggest that you give Denco Turbo a call in Wagga Wagga, you can talk to Bronwyn and let her know that John at Radd Cruisers referred you.

Denco Diesel & Turbo - If It's Diesel Injection or Turbo, Denco Do It.

The 1HZ is going to do very well at relatively low boost, and will have great longevity if you respect it a little.

Try maarten at maarten@all-american.nl , he has upgraded piston, rods and spcial 1hz turbo's.
Has a lot of experience in building 1hz-t engines even for the toyota organisation.

Cheers,

Mike

Sent from my iPad using IH8MUD... fun starts where the road ends

Hey mate, garrett has come out with a gtx range of turbos, ill be using the gtx2860 soon.. An update of the gt2860R. Its a full billet machined wheel, spools faster, stronger and heaps better flow than the gt range, google it. Abit pricey but its well worth it if your getting a brand new turbo

Hey mate, where you buying yours from, and do you know the rev range it's most efective in??
