Hi gang,

Just after some hive mind advice about the starter motor on my 1HZ 80 series. After a recent immersion during a deeper than expected water crossing I initially had no trouble starting the engine for the next week or so while we were away. Then I parked it up for a couple of months and now when I go to start it I get no action, just a clunk on releasing the key.

I've confirmed good charge in the crank battery, good contact at battery terminals and battery-to-starter cables.

I've pulled down the starter motor and cleaned up the solenoid contacts, confirmed plenty of meat on the brushes and everything seems to move/rotate fairly freely.

Putting everything back together I tested off the vehicle using heavy cable and I'm unable to get the starter output shaft to throw out fully (and nor does the output shaft rotate at all). The shaft throws out maybe an inch or so and then just kinda gives up. I can pull the shaft out to its full extension by hand, or if I rotate it manually it will extend fully, just not by applying power.

I tried re-fitting it to the vehicle to rule out insufficient current in my testing arrangement but I get the same result.

Any suggestion what I should be checking or replacing next? The whole unit is over $1,000 AUD so I'm inclined to persevere a little to try and resolve it myself.

Cheers

Have you tried applying power to the starter after the solenoid to rule that out? Solenoid rebuild kits are cheap, but if your contacts are ok that shouldn't be necessary.

I had a similar issue on a 1HZ starter, water damage had corroded the internals and the shaft/pinion needed persuading with a mallet to free em up. Worked for a little while, but kept playing up. Could be pulled apart, cleaned up and rebuilt, but in the end I just bought an aftermarket starter (~$350 I think), haven't had any issues so far but time will tell.

sounds like the windings are shorted. take the brushes back off and test. There are many different 1hz starters out there. Might be worth trying a different part number even if you have to change out the plug. I ran about 6 different part numbers and bought the least expensive genuine 12v starter for my build.

I think I did, but I'll give that another go as soon as I'm able to confirm.

I'm a bit wary of aftermarket with something like a starter motor but it seems like you had a reasonable success there - I don't suppose you have a record of the model you got?

Yeah there's 6 listed on Amayama, maybe I'll do some googling on those.
here in the USA the local dealer is alot less then amayama when it comes to starters.

Lots of aftermarket in Aus is junk. I think it was an OEX, Denso is also ok. Just comes down to budget and time really.
