I am in the process of doing my H55 swap on my 91 HZJ77. My rear main is NOT leaking but I figure I might as well replace it while I am here. I bought a new OEM rear main seal.

I just removed the old A440f flywheel junk off and the rear main seal in the truck doesn’t look like the seal in my hand. Is this the factory seal or has it been replaced? Looks like foam or something next to the crank.

I just want to make sure that isnt something special Im not aware of before i go to prying it out to drive my new one in.

Thanks for any info

If I recall, Toyota dropped the felt dust deal from the rear main, probably to save costs. If you have a genuine NOK seal which fits, you are fine.

If I was taking the sump (oil pan) off, sure. Having to pry it out and risk scratching the crank or deforming the retainer, when the seal looks to be perfectly good, I'd probably leave it.

Murphy's law for me has been that whenever I've had the transmission out for any reason at all, and not replaced the rear main, it starts leaking more or less immediately after...or that's what it feels like anyway.

I'd do it while I had the easy access, but it's much easier with the oil pan removed.

Felt seal is an aftermarket seal.

1Hx/1PZ engines never used that from the factory or for service parts support.

I’m assembling an -FT and this is the seal: will be the same for all 1Hx/1PZ iterations (at least if you buy your parts from Toyota).

I'm not familiar with the 1HZ/1PZ/1HD etc engines, but for late B engines (3Bii, 14B etc) I can give the example of my 3Bii. This came from factory with 90311-95005 which I believe has a felt dust seal on top of the rubber oil seal. This has since been superseded to 90311-95008 which does not have a felt dust seal. The front crank oil seal, 90311-50013 also has a felt dust seal.

So given that the 1HZ also has a 95 mm rear crank diameter, it's possible that the B Series seal was fitted at some point

Thats the seal that I just installed in place of the felt one. 👍

A quick question though, there is no issues if the seal accidentally went about an 1/8” deeper than yours is there? If so I guess i can pull it but I figure itll just ride on a different place on the crank, right?
It just kinda went in further than I meant to…🤷🏼‍♂️

Thanks

I like them flush with the assembly surface. Give it a slight tap from the back side.

I pulled the seal and replaced it without removing the retainer…I suppose i can remove it and bump it out if you think it absolutely necessary?
