I live in Florida and have never had my truck in cold weather until today. This morning in about 40f weather it took about 15 minutes to warm up and barely ran until it did. No power. Tonight after dinner at a restaurant it started and ran fine but 2 or 3 miles down the road it happened again. I think driving at speed cooled it down faster than it coukd warm up. 5 minutes of idling and it was perfect again. What should I check?

Thanks!

Are your glow plugs working? You could put some cardboard in front of the radiator to inhibit cold air hitting the radiator.
Like many diesels, the 1 HZ returns an unused portion of the fuel to the tank, this warms the fuel, which becomes easier to burn..
I would also turn up the idling when cold to about 1200rpm

Most likely. I can cool a 1HZ down from 110c to 60c in a few minutes rolling down a hill

Hm... How would I know if the glow plugs are not working? The preheat function works well.

I pull them out and connect 12v to each one for a few seconds.
Is it running rough?
How many klms has the engine done. Low compression often rears its head in cold weather.

118,000 km. Does not run rough at all except when it's having this problem in cold weather.

The normal fan clutch.

Ok well some tropic and desert climate spec Cruisers have a direct drive fan, hence why I asked. They never warm up when it’s below 40*F.

Glow plugs-intake heater will only be an issue with starting, when it’s cold. Not going to cause any problems besides then, even if the Cruiser has been shut down for 2+ hrs.

Cheers

It started right up both times but would not run right until it got fully up to temp.

I won't make any comments regarding cold starting in FL.

Overall, it's been a bit of a mild winter here in CT. Coldest was a 1 deg morning.

My 2LT starts fine but will run rough unless you crank the idle up to about 1200 rpm's then drop it down to 1000.

I drive for about 1 mile before returning the idle to normal. Takes about 1.5 to 2 miles for the engine to be warm enough to provide heat.
