So I'm planning on replacing the oil in my 100, but don't know which weight to go with..

PO said there is 10w40 in it, and factory a sticker under the hood states 10w30 to be used. Then there is this guy on youtube who says 0w40 worked the best for him..

I'm confused. Help!:D

10W40 or 10W30 are both fine. Going to 0W40 would be for extreme cold winter.

But a 0w40 does everything a 10w40 does, doesn't it? It just adds that "extra" that it's good for colder weather too?

So you're saying your trust, in Toyota ENGINEERs, who are also responsible for specifying oil type to be used, was shook by some dude on youtube?

Toyota will have a complete oil chart for that engine with grade by temperature. All of the discussed options are suitable for different climates.

I’m saying that at least 21 years have passed since the invention of the FTE engine:) And the oils today are very different from the oils 21 years ago

Toyota serivice manual. Seriously a good quality oil and call it good, these motors aren't particularly fussy at all

Why is 10w30 good above 100F but 5w30 only good up to 50F? They should be good up to the same temp, don’t they?

Thanks for that. Interestingly I have Nissan and Isuzu engine manuals which show exactly the same chart with I'm sure exactly the same oil grades.

I'd say because oils are a lot better now than they were. Back then a 10W30 would have contained more long molecules which kept viscosity better above the standard 100C test temp and the 5W30 may have struggled.

Now we have a HTHS (high temperature high stress) test which is done at 150C which lighter oils (0W and 5W) can pass easily. But back then I suspect a lot of lighter oils couldn't.
