Hey guys yesterday I was changing my timing belt on my 1996 HDJ80 which has the one 1HD - FT engine. Behind the actual timing belt is in aluminum plate that holds the oil seal that goes around the camshaft. When that aluminum plate is removed there is a piece of foam stuck behind it that was installed by Toyota from the factory. When I reassembled everything I forgot to put this foam piece back. Does anyone know what this is for and if it is necessary? Blows a picture I took showing the piece of foam.

I believe it is simply for noise reduction.
Yes I was thinking the exact same thing Thank you for confirming this. I can't imagine a piece of foam doing anything else or being for any structural support of the aluminum plate.
