Need immediate help. I have less than a week to get my tranny sorted before I'm stranded in MS. Aamco says there is "a non-replaceable bearing" that is still whining after they spent three weeks rebuilding it. Is this legit? I can't believe my only option is a "good, used replacement." I let Toyota have the first shot at it, but they sat on the truck for five days and didn't even look at it. Please help.

That sounds odd to me. There may be a pressed on bearing that requires a press, but I don't think there are any non-serviceable parts in either the auto or manual tranny's.

Thanks for the reply jynx; can anyone else confirm? Professional, nation-wide tranny shop should have all tools required to rebuild a very common Toyota, no?

I would think so. Did they say what bearing? Auto or manual?

Manual, they didn't say which bearing. I do know they had to take it apart and put it back together three times. Now that it is back in the truck, it still whines like it did when I took it in.

What gear does it whine in? As far as I know there isn't a single part of a manual trans that can't be taken apart. You basically split the two halves of the case and then all three shafts can be removed and the associated bearings and races pressed out and replaced.

I am flipping thru my FSM right now to see if I am missing something.

Edit: I don't see anything that can't be rebuilt or replaced. You said it was a non-serviceable bearing, most of the bearings in the FSM show they should be replaced, so I guess technically according to them they are all non-serviceable, but any good kit should include all those bearings.

My trans in my 1990 was whining and I ended up needing a new 5th gear. Is there any other shop close, there isn't any reason they shouldn't be able to replace or rebuild every single part in a manual trans, sounds like they are trying everything to not have to do it right.

Can you call them tomorrow and ask them to tell you specifically which bearing it is? Also do you have the R150F or W59? Because, my FSM is for a 98 4Runner so it might have something different in it. If they can tell you what bearing it is and specifically where it is located, Input shaft, output shaft, counter shaft, front housing, rear housing or intermediate plate, I bet I can find that bearing with a phone call or two.

I may be wrong, and if I am someone please correct me but this sounds off to me.

I'm not sure when it whines as I haven't driven it since I took it in- this is based on the shop's report. I would also expect a rebuild would include all new bearings. It didn't seem right to me that they couldn't replace something during a rebuild, let alone a bearing. There are other shops, but I live on the West coast and wanted a warranty that I could fall back on outside of Mississippi.

Thnks jynx...I'll get specifics

Your welcome, and just my experience, but the small shops tend to do a better job. They have to to stay open and compete. Not sure what you are down there for, or specifically where you are, but I would pop over to the clubhouse and post up in the MS specific section to see if anyone can give you a recommendation for a good shop in the area you are in.

Just curious if you were able to get things sorted out.

seems odd...I rebuilt a 93 manual transmission in college nothing that wasn't serviceable.

Does it change through out speed or only at certain speeds (gears)? If it is constaint I would think it could also be in the TCase or axle.

At least you have some great breweries near by to help with the pain:beer:
