Had a 90 Civic LX 5 speed that got 35 - 40 MPG.

I own a 95 Accord LX with 5 speed - I get 29 average around town and 33-34 on the highway.

I bet the 97 Civic will get 35 at least. Make sure the timing belt was changed every 90,000 miles.

Thanks for the input. The timing belt & water pump were changed last year from a Honda dealer at 85K, based on the service recrods. Going to run a Carfax, hope it will turn out O.K. :D

The waterpump is usually changed with the timing belt since it is driven from it.

I like a 5 speed in the little cars. Had an auto tranny go out on an old Audi Fox and it was quite costly.

Owned a few honda cars, a few acuras (one auto) and still own a honda bike. The automatics are VERY durable. I neutral-dropped my auto Integra LS from redline at least 30 times at a track trying to blow it up after I heard the autos are weak (plus I had another one that was rebuilt waiting to go in). That car had 183,000 some odd miles on it and it never had issues despite the abuse. It also got around 32-35 on the freeway. My 5-speeds got roughly 40ish on highway including my CRX's. They all had their original tranny and all had over 150,000 on the odometer. I swear by Honda. I love the sounds of BIG V8s, but even my K5 Blazer had more issues then all my hondas combined! My last 2 honda cars and my bike... miss my CRX the most, white civic saved from "Ricer" who had red racing stripes and some other crap on it and the bike has over 85,000!

All Hondas and they've never let me down. So I say buy it and enjoy one of the most reliable economy cars.

My first car was a '91 Honda Accord, had 315,000 miles on it when I sold it. Never had anything done but oil changes. 5-sp manual shifted like new even with that mileage. Only reason I dumped it was the rust was basically eating the car alive.

Did I mention it still had the original clutch when I got rid of it? Pedal felt nice (hydraulic clutch), no slippage. Truely amazing.

my 84 honda accord 5 spd consistantly gets 30+ mpg, in-town or on the highway. 2nd owner, coming up on the big 300k, and the drivers door outer skin is starting to rust through. love dis car!
