I recently purchased a 1996 Limited 4x4 4Runner (first year of the 3rd Generation).
After a drive, and shutting the truck down, there is an intermittent “buzzing” coming from the driver’s side of the engine bay.
Research shows this is unique to the 1996 4Runners, is “normal” and is nothing to worry about.
A quick Google led me to a thread:
This identifies the issue, Toyota’s fix (no longer available) and an enthusiast’s fix utilizing a tin mustard can.
The issue is with the Evap Canister. The linked thread doesn’t detail the “why”, just pics of a fix (only necessary if it annoys you) and the note that it is nothing to worry about.

I made this post so that, when others search, IH8MUD has a thread that addresses the issue.
