Hi to everyone, :)

I am a first time 80 owner and i need help, here is my problem,

Today while driving my OD light starts blinking, i noticed my tranny is not down shifting when i try to slow down, after a stop if i step on the gas again i could tell it is not in 1st gear cause its just slowly moving and feels like slipping, i tried to shift to L and i could feel the normal 1st gear with a thud and power, then to 2nd gear and to D, she's driving okay if i do it like in manual, i tried to get the code and it's giving code 62..i have no idea what is wrong with mY 80, Please help.:frown:

Best Regards,

Rain

a flashing OD light is like a check engine light. MOF, it is the "check engine" light for the transmission.

I'd get, or find a Factory Service Manual and and find out how to get the code.

I'm not familiar enough to tell you where it is and how to get it. Check out the FAQ maybe it's in there.

This sounds exactly like my solenoid problem, and I'm going to guess that you have an A442F as well. If so, it is not actually slipping, but it is attempting to start out in second or third gear.

Verify your transmission (drivers side door) and then post up; but it sounds like you had the same issue I had.

My thread:

Shift solenoid part number is: 85420-60050 x2. cruiserdan at American Toyota can get them for approx. $145.00 each (lists at around $195/ea.), but if this is your issue, it is WELL worth the coin.

95 FZJ should have an A343F, but it's still solenoid shift valvebody so you could get similar issues.

X2. A '95 should have a A343F/OBD2, but the code would be in the POXXX configuration. My guess would be late '94, A442F/OBD1?

-1. Some '95 80s came with the A442F (vehicle identical to 93-94 but with partial OBD2 compliance).

a442 tranny

It is a late 95 with A442 tranny, i clear the code and checked again and it is giving the code 62 fault, I read through SPD WAVER1's thread and it looks very similar considering he also has the 62 code, but why my 80 runs OK at L shift? unlike in D where you can feel its is possibly in a higher gear. SPD noted that with him there is no difference from D to L shift in his case.

I will be looking out here in my place where i could possibly get the SOlenoid valves.

The oil level is slightly above the higher notch at "HOT", I checked this while idling at P. Is there another way to check the correct level?

Would a change oil fix this early sign of possible solenoid problem.

Thanks to you guys for all the input, honestly i was really bothered before i asked this, but THIS FORUM really helps a lot, knowing that you are not alone solving the problem of any 80, I hope i can find new solenoid here if it really is the culprit.

Just so you are aware, the shifting issues that many others have when the solenoids go out can vary slightly from one to the next. I would not take such a strong stance on this if the solenoids did not fix the problem, though my problems varied slightly from others' problems.

At the very least you can replace a part that might eventually need replacing; at most it cures the problem.

Remember, you will need two of these solenoids.

Right.. "Some 95's were produced with the A442F"
I had heard that before, but I figured it was just the first bunch off the line in Jan 95.
At any rate, dang cool combo.

70sguy- not as cool as you might think- those rare '95 models are identical to the 93-94s (no airbags, old dash style, etc.). AFAIK, the only difference is partial OBD2 compliance, and I'm not even sure the '95/A442F models had partial OBD2- it may have only been the later '95/A343F models that got that feature.

Perhaps Rain can tell us...Rain- does your rig have (partial) OBD2?

Oh... that's too bad. Here I was thinking it was later dash, airbags etc and the bus tranny.
From a 1HD-T/1HD-FT and ATM conversion standpoint the A442F 80s are the ones to do. 343F makes for extra work and wiring issues.

Ok.. back to the shifting issue.
Hijack off..

Hi guys, yes its a 95 with A442F/K294 trans-axle, the old dash, no airbags, no abs, etc, it has 3x factory lockers, dual tank, ice box, 3rd row seat, factory leather,sunroof.....

343

Please verify which tranny by checking your drivers door jam...it will have the tranny model printed there. Mine is made in 2/95 and it's got the 343.

If it's the 343, you may have accidentally hit the "2nd gear start" button located down on the console. It is easy to set something down on it and actuate it. This button makes your rig start out in 2nd gear.

@mtlandcruiser Unless I’m misunderstanding what you’re saying, that’s the overdrive light... it comes on when you turn overdrive off with the little button on the side of the shifter.
