I found this rig last fall in Boone, NC, called up and found out it had the factory locking differentials front & rear and went up to drive it. Drove out great, has some rust from the salt up there and a dent or two, so I drove it home.
Since then, we did a "quick" fix of the rust just under the rear window glass and if I get serious someone about trading / selling, I will repaint the rear hatch the right way, make it look nice. (Dent in the hatch and replace rear bumper cap / have a replacement already from a fellow IH8MUD'r)
Maint. wise, I had EVERY fluid on the vehicle replaced, radiator flushed (Toyota Red in there now), etc. I also did a front end rebuild on the axle, pulling everything out, replacing ALL seals, etc. Also switched the birfield sides too from side to side / was clicking before.
I found a set of Goodyear MTRs in 285/75/16 and put them on there (EXCELLENT tread) and then had a set of rock sliders welded on after fixing the various exhaust leaks / new muffler etc.
This spring, had the a/c converted over to the new stuff, added a brake controller (7 pin plug in rear) AND added a set of airbags on the rear for towing too!!
I towed our 6k lbs camper to Uwharrie to watch the 4x4 race and was a bit disapointed in the highway performance with that big a load. Speeds would drop to the 45mph range on smaller hills, just not enough grunt to hold 60-65 hwy speeds towing that weight. Engine has TONS of torque, but all low end rpms, big I-6.
MPG around town, 12... MPG towing 6,000 lbs, STILL, 12 mpg!!
Rig has 137-138k something, thousand miles on it.
Prices are really screwy on these rigs, with the e-lockers, seeing them listed on here for as much as 8k on there with this kind of miles, depends on the year etc.
I am going to set the "price" at $6500
What I would LIKE to find / trade for. Something I can do mild wheeling (Uwharrie, etc) AND tow our camper with.
Chances are that means a v8 (or diesel), DEF a 4x4, and outside of that I am fairly open. Needs to be rated to tow 6k or more.
Trades, just willing to be reasonable, if your trade value is lower, will take cash between, will consider straight trades and even willing to shell out a few bucks for the RIGHT vehicle.
Things I have considered:
Toyota Tundra (#1 choice)
Toyota Landcruiser 1998+ (v8)
Toyota Sequoia (that could get ugly on the trail)
(Toyota 4Runner/Taco, not sure the 3.4 v6 will have enough grunt though?)
Chevy, Ford, Dodge Pickups & SUVs
Let the games begin!
