I have a friend whose '90 4runner has a water leak near the water pump. pump pulleys and timing belt were replaced about 19k miles ago. no water in oil or oil in water and no smoke from tail pipe. she says leak is center to left side.

suggestions on what to tell her? I mentioned thermostat already. thanks.

The theremostat housing is right next to the water pump in that area, are you sure it's not coming from there? Other than that, there aren't a lot of orings and the like.

Our 1990 4Runner did that and needed a new water pump. Did they try Bars Leaks?

If it's the 3.slow what you see on the front of the engine is just a bracket to hold the pulleys and fan assembly. They will need to pull that mess off and then they will be able to see the water pump...i'm with Steve it probably the water pump or at least where it seals to the block.

what's a "3.slow"?

the pump and thermostat is what I was thinking too, but don't have a 4runner to look at. I don't think she or her husband are very mechanical. I'll pass along this info. thanks!

just got this back-

"Found it, A little hose that goes into the intake manifold on top of the engine. Looks like a bitch to replace but it's doable."

I guess they may be more mechanical than I suspected! sounds like the thermostat hose to me. or a throttle body warmer hose.

A 3.slow was the 3.0 V6 Toyota put into the ~1987 to 1995 4Runners - late first gen through second gen. It was maybe a little stronger than than a 22RE, but got a lot worse gas mileage and had a habit of exploding the fan. It was slow, ate a lot of gas, and was not very dependable. I'm surprised Toyota used it as long as they did...

Although I have to admit a friend of mine at work has 264k on his with no problems.

now I get it!
