This vehicle was completely overhauled last year as part of writing a service manual. Every gasket in the engine has been changed, along with almost every wearing part.
It’s been upgraded with a special aftermarket head that improves performance and doesn’t crack (some LJ70’s were shipped with defective heads that developed cracks). The stock radiator has been replaced with a custom-built unit that’s 50% larger, greatly improving heat dissipation. It also has a high-flow thermostat and an upgraded water pump. The engine will never, ever overheat in normal use.
The turbocharger on this vehicle has also been completely rebuilt, every moving part replaced with top of the line components from Melett UK. I also replaced the turbine housing with a brand new casting. The finished turbo measured 0.000093 G at 110,000rpm during final balance, which is good enough for a racecar.
This Land Cruiser has been upgraded with a 1500 watt engine pre-heat system. It uses a flow-heater and an electric pump to circulate hot coolant through the engine block before starting, taking it from -30C to +90C in less than an hour. The vehicle starts instantly in the coldest weather; and because the system heats all of the coolant in the engine, the cab heat works from the moment you turn the key …no warm-up required.
The stock radio has been replaced with a high-end touchscreen entertainment system that does practically everything imaginable. It can read CD’s and DVD’s, and has two memory card slots. The system can play MP3’s and WMA files stored on any of the above media, and it can also connect directly to an iPod via a docking cable in the vehicle’s glove box. The unit has a powerful built-in GPS system with a roof-mounted antenna. It can receive television broadcasts, and can display video from a back-up camera right on the screen.
The only reason I’m selling this vehicle is because I’m moving abroad in a few months and I’m probably not coming back. Good as this vehicle is, it’s not worth the staggering import taxes and shipping charges necessary to get it to its new home; especially if I end up in a city where a vehicle isn’t necessary.
This Land Cruiser is a solid, reliable, and fuel-efficient vehicle that will deliver dependable performance for years to come. Properly maintained, it shouldn’t need any major work for over 100,000 kilometers. Many Land Cruisers reach a million kilometers or more before the end of their service lives.
