Getting it back together, always a snag.

So I ordered the oil filter gasket, orings and gaskets for the oil cooler from Canada but….apparently there is a strike about wages or something with Canada post and since I’m a dumb yank, all I can think of is this

Anyways, that means my package that should
Have been here yesterday, might be here next week or next month….no fault of the place I got it from.

So, I went ahead and ordered most from partsouq except the oil filter gasket which appears NLA from partsouq. 15691.
Can I just use FIPG there until my order arrives or am I Stuck waiting. I couldn’t seem to find that gasket.

Black FIPG may work. How hard is that to get to when everything is assembled? If it's buried deep I'd wait for the gasket.

It’s not buried too much. Since it’s on the outside of the oil cooler, I don think you will loose any coolant, but I need to inspect it a little more before that decision.

Edit: I suppose I could make one, but it’s not the most fun to trace out.

If you do make one be sure to select an oil-resistant gasket paper. A cool way to cut holes for bolts and passages is spent cartridge cases. Sharpen the case mouth a bit and use it like a leather punch.

DO NOT use a live-primed case...

Got some more work in

That was stuck on with FIPG. Unfun.

Here’s where I stopped tonight. Mostly all together. Still have the oil cooler to do once my parts show up.

Tip: instead of heating up the front timing cover on a water bath, I just used a heat gun and slowly heated the area applying pressure with my hand until it popped right over the automatic timer.

Got the oil cooler parts from partsouq. 1 week is what it took.

Here’s my made up gasket. This felpro rubberized gasket paper for oil. Not pretty but it fits. Hopefully no issues. I have this coming from Canada….whenever the strike is over.

Now I should be able to put it all back together and get it back and running.

Next time you're at China Freight, pick up a set of these, they come in handy.

Doh! Fixed it. Hole punches is what it was supposed to be.

Steps forward….steps back.

All together

Houston we have a problem. When filling up the coolant, on the 3rd gallon, coolant starting pouring out the front. 😕. Looks like it is coming from the block/thermostat gasket. Cinched up tight, still leaking! Just draining out.

It’s a metal gasket, I assume crush, maybe I put it in backwards? Is that possible?
Anyway will Probabaly order another….

Since I pushed it outside just in case coolant spilled or something….decided to start it and drive up the incline to my shop.

Crank crank crank, prime prime crank. Crack injector lines, some fuel comes out but no fire.
😕
Bleeding at fuel pump shows fuel.
Pump firms up but not 100%, prime prime nothing. Walk away 1 min later first pump has no resistance…..

Prime. No start. Prime while cranking. Nothing.
Prime up and open bleeder to let lots of fuel out. Now the prime pump has zero resistance after 5 mins up pumping.
Pretty sure that failed somehow….

Outside she sits.

I feel your pain, I just had a similar week working on the Prado. Only accomplished about a third of what I set out to do, had to leave it without brakes for the next week while I wait on parts to arrive.

Hopefully the thermostat housing gasket is all that is wrong with your cooling system. Shame about the primer pump, seems like something always fails if a vehicle sits for any length of time.

Yeah, I should’ve tempered my excitement a little bit. I was only gonna do a little bit today but then everything started going back together so easy and quick I was like might as well just fill it up and get going.

That gasket is a crush and I’m wondering if there was a two ways to put it on and I just chose the wrong way. Or there’s a piece of crud or something I didn’t see but I kind of find that hard to believe too. I cleaned all the surfaces.

And of course, the primer pump is just who knows…. It worked last time I changed the fuel filter which wasn’t that long ago, I think it was less than a year ago, but it’s definitely not doing anything right now.

damn, that sucks, just make a gasket, i havent seen a metal gasket for that one.... seems like it shouldnt be to me

Yeah pretty annoying. I don’t think I had a metal one before so I guess I could make one. Maybe it would take up the extra space if any.

Here’s the oem…

i used the blue sheet out of the felpro make your own gasket kit with a smear of high temp gasket maker, for all coolant related stuff when i redid mine, its holding up

I don't think those steel gaskets for the thermostat housing (and oil filter bracket to oil cooler housing) have a right and wrong way. But they need perfect surfaces to seal. Around here, everything like that gets silicone RTV. I don't like to do it, but it's a reliable solution.

I find with these old vehicles that one either goes through everything and replaces any questionable/wear-prone parts, or one is forever fixing something. But then my BJ has been in parts in various locations in my house/garage for the last 4 years.
