back at the recurring projects I want to get done.

Intercooler…I’ve delved back down the rabbit hole again and there are just limited options and none are “easy” on the narrow nose.

Heres my 19” intercooler sitting on 1 of the skid plates below the engine on the front.

There is room for the 90s and pipes up.

I won’t cut up this skid plate, but I will make some sort of mount to put the intercooler on and make an air ram setup to pull air from underneath.

IMG_5072.webp

Now I’m not sure how effective it will be underneath, but some ducting, louvre etc will be needed to ensure some good airflow to it.

I should be able to rotate the turbo to downflow to make that side and pretty easy connection. The other side will be a little tougher as it’s going to take a 180 or greater on that side and then over beside the battery and down.

This may be a horrible idea, but if it doesn’t work even close to 100ish degrees, then that’s pretty good win and easy setup without modifying a lot.

And of course photos from yesterday’s evening cruise to go fishing.

Hi
I suggest to make sure you can remove the skidplate separately for maintenance etc.
Also you should consider your offroad use cases for your rig: The skidplate may scoope up quite some dirt and mud, I.p. when going through puddles; the IC might get affected..
Good Luck Ralf

I don’t think I’m going to use that skid plate. Probabaly a modified custom one so that I still have the OEM one.

I’m not a big mud guy, honestly ih8mud :rimshot:, so I really tend to stay out of it.

That said, it’s 22” off the ground, right above the steering stabilizer, behind the other skid plate. It’s going to take some testing. The front skid plate might be able to be spaced down in front in effect “ram air” in that intercooler as it will sit right there.

What I don’t know is if the big ol ARB on the front is going to push all the air away from that.

Although you’re showing way too much Land Cruiser, that top, sunset photo is the “money shot”. 👍

Went to Reno, susanvile CA and Fallon NV ( home to the real TOPGUN, United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, fun fact) and again I didn’t see a single Land Cruiser or even a Prado….what is going on.

Worked on our little drift boat. It was in rough shape, but for free, it’s fun for the kid to go out hit the small lakes, rivers and fish away. Had to ghetto fix fiberglass, new wood on the sides (still need to seal) stainless hardware, hammer and torch the seats out and grind regrease them, install the oars/oarlocks.

Still needs plenty of work.

Fits mostly in the back of the truck and is pretty light.

IMG_5126.webp

Saw this in town today. Of course I didn’t drive the 74 in, only the GX470 so that’s not cool enough. Pretty positive it’s @Nay

IMG_5121.webp

And of course, sunset

…harrumph…we’re here, even if our photos aren’t as smokin..

…you didn’t drop by to check out my 70 and near neighbors 40 & 60 while you were here…

…i drove through a new neighborhood Friday and clocked 3x 40’s in two blocks…

To clean to be Nays 😁

I must have been in the completely wrong part of the state! Noted for next time.

To clean to be Nays 😁

That’s a good thing! Pretty sure they are on rising sun forum, but so far no one on there has fessed up.

Happy late Father’s Day to all you.

A little more figuring out this intercooler possibility.

Here’s where it fits the best. You can see a piece of strap steel I put in place of the rear skid plate as a mount.

I had help on the project.

So looking at this, I think a lot of airflow would be blocked. I’m thinking of ducting or ram air into the intercooler and have a few thoughts.

IMG_5137.webp

There are quite a few inches above the intercooler to box it in like an air filter cover box and a feed from cooler air.

My idea is something like @AirheadNut Built, but I do not posses the tools or skills to make it/weld it that way.
IMG_5199.webp

It could be made out of light gauge aluminum or even fiberglass if I make a mold.

As for feeding it air, I have some ideas, and some are probably terrible. I can vent from between the frame/fender on each side, basically making a vent/duct to feed air.

Another thought, using the original intake for the BJ74 since I have a “hated by most” snorkel

IMG_5138.webp

That would dump right down with some pipe for a pretty easy supply of air over the cooler. Is this air cool enough? I would have to modify it a little to get the angle/dump/bend right so it may be more work than I’m thinking.

IMG_5133.webp

I’ll try mocking that up next week if I can make it back to Colorado to grab my extra parts.

I am wondering what the air pressure might be above and below your prospective mount location when going down the highway. With the engine fan pulling air through the rad, does that rad-heated air go down and then under the truck? If I was 20 years old I’d suggest taping smoke bombs here and there, mounting a Gopro under the hood and driving fast. Too old for that now but you get the idea.

it be a good picture, just sayin....

Too old? TOO OLD?!?

Too old to play with smoke bombs and go pro's?? Your NEVER too old for shenanigans like that!!

Rumor has it that I am nearing 60 (I think it is a vile conspiracy!!) and I just got my first go pro last week. True story! 😅

Though I will admit that I have yet to pick up some smoke bombs... but then I am not trying to deduce air flow behaviors within a 70 series engine bay. It is a good point, however.

So …
After a series of unfortunate events last night, I had to go out and rescue my tundra today.

IMG_5204.webp

Now that sand/mud is SOFT! With a narrow long shovel, you can put it on the surface, with one hand not pressing hard at all and bury it 2’ without hardly any effort. Basically in just that one spot.

It really doesn’t look that bad, but I was being a little cautious to make sure I didn’t find another soft spot. It was buried and sitting on the frame up front. That made me decide not to pull it from the front side.

IMG_5207.webp

What do you need to recover this? A couple shovels, boards oh and a Land Cruiser with an 8274.

IMG_5209.webp

This section of the lake is usually well underwater. They are keeping it lower as there are some repairs and surveys that need to be done on the Kingsley dam from damage.

The blue spot is where the pickup was stuck. Red it where the boat ramp is.

IMG_5216.webp

Posing. But I was in 4wd high and used the winch so I’m cool? Btw, the one time one of those oveuerelaunder rigs with 20 maxtraxs and rotopax would have helped!

IMG_5212.webp

On the sandy beach side, Ive been tempting fate by going 4 high, 40psi…not @svsisu beach sand travel approved.

I’m sorry, I forgot to send your reminder sticker

That stuff is like quicksand, no amount of air down or Öveuerelaunder plastic tracks with rostipax would have helped. Just proper recovery gear- a 70 series with a winch, shovels and boards!

I would think there are a lot of spots like that with the water so low at the lake. We get some "red sand" on the beach that just sucks you down like that- it happens fast and is scary.
