I just got the call I've been dreading. My mechanic tells me the latest problem (steering) on my trusty land cruiser will cost a couple grand to fix. It's a 1987 with about 180K miles. Life on the NC coast has not been good to my truck as she has some bad rust issues. I've owned it for about 15 years and hate to see it go, but I'm not a mechanic and don't want to invest any more money in the truck due to the rust issues.

I feel like a vet just told me that I need to put my dog down.

The engine runs well (aside from the steering issues) and the interior is in good shape. The air conditioner does not work, but the heater does. My only modification was to add a Kenwood six-disc CD changer. It could be a good project car for someone or perhaps just a parts car.

I'm not sure how to value it, but will listen to all offers. I'll post pictures tomorrow. The car is located in Morehead City, NC.

Asking price $2,500 OBO.

Steering

I'll have to get more info from my mechanic. But, it seems that much of the front end assembly is rusted and would have to be replaced. My mechanic's estimate using new Toyota parts was about $2,000.

tracecoop... I'm local, let me know where it is, and maybe I can check it out for you...looks like it is on Arendell near the AB High Rise?

I'll go by and check it out today...

I went by this afternoon. Looks like it would be an OK ride for someone who isn't afriad to put a couple bucks into it. Interior looks great ( I was envious of your headliner)... and the rest of the body is ok considering the coastal location and all.

If I were you, I'd take it somewhere else to fix it... I use Cliff's in Swansboro... he is takes his time, but they have worked on my 60... you can probably source the parts, and I know Cliff will put the parts in if you bring'em.

I noticed you moved it... what are the symptoms? is there a specific broken part? What exactly does he mean by the entire front end?... because $2000 for the parts plus labor is way out there.

What is your plan?

The steering problem occurred the other day as I was pulling into a parking spot--there was a pop and the steering wheel began to turn freely without any effect on the front wheels. According to the mechaninc, most of the bolts are rusted and to repair the steering problem would require replacing a lot of the parts along the way.

I don't think he did a detailed estimate because he knew that I wasn't planning on putting much more into the truck.

I had it moved to my house so I could figure out what to do with it. I don't drive it enough to warrant putting much money into it and don't have the time to learn how to keep it up myself (which is what I'd really like to do). My plan is to get a second estimate to get it driving again and will probably put it on e-bay motors or in the Bargain Trader to see what I can get for it.

Trace,I might take it off your hands if you needed to just wash your hands of it.Check your PM.
