Located north of Barrie, Ontario my 1986 Toyota diesel is up for sale. 280000km on truck. New used motor with new rad, tires that are stock, but in great shape. Resprung and new shocks. Frame is in great shape, with rust over the rear wheel wells normal for the trucks. Looking for $5600.00 OBO

Since it is a Canadian market vehicle I am pretty sure it meets the requirements for importation (you would want to check with an importer though).

From what I understand/what my research said - it can get in if it is >25 years old OR if it is a USA/Canada market vehicle. This gets in under the second part, and the 25 year old thing doesn't matter - which makes sense since it is the same truck we had in the US but with the HJ engine in it.

correct. NA spec vehicle can be legally imported even if not 25 years old. lots of importer threads on here.
cheers,
J

It is $5,200. in kijiji and the dollar is about par. There are a few good diesel units like yours available in Ontario right now, very slightly more money and a little bit better condition from what I can tell. ..but they all, like yours are still on the market...so ya, I think they all are a little overpriced for the current market, and ya, I have been in the market for such a cruiser over this past year, for the best dollar I can. Money is tight and I want to buy a good used left drive diesel cruiser, but am concerned about the condition of the engine, and the frame is probably worse than you realize judging from my experience, and the evident rust seen past the 'normal' level. It appears to have not been oiled or seldom rust proofed, looking at the orange springs and inner fenders. Please send me undercarriage photos, engine and interior pics. For a good drive train, frame and interior, I can do business. I can fabricate body and paint, but for my money, the rest must be best. Thank you in advance for your consideration of this opportunity,

Cheers, Madogeoff

Well yes money is always the deciding factor is it not. I have had this truck for five years, oiled it a few times, however I did overheat the motor. I machined the head and checked it for cracks, and had the valves looked at as well. I put it all back together again with no better results. Cheap ends up costing in the end. That was two summers ago. I found a used motor from a guy that does diesel conversion. I did not hear the motor running he told me it was a good runner. After six hours of driving eight hours to buttom her back up, first turn of the key it was running again. That is the first time in a few years that I have had it back on the road, thus the orange springs and inner fenders. The truck was stored in my shop so rust happens. As far as the frame goes I have had these trucks for eleven years and looked at my fair share and this frame is good, not sure on your back ground nor am I challenging it but the frame is not worse than I realize. The truck is not new I am only sell because my wife dislikes the 60 series. Our deal was sell the 86 hj60, get rid of the 84 bj60 and in exchange buy a 40 series. That's what I'm trying to do as I picked up a 1969 in great shape. We went threw a move this summer so time was very valueable this summer, and the truck did not get much time, or more money put to her. So the old motor with a good head, starter, new injectors, pump, etc, etc can be worked into the deal, or I will sell after I sell the truck. I wantd to offer the potential buyer first dibbs on that gear. Hope you find this info useful, and I welcome the opportunity.
Cheers, Dennis

Thanks Dennis, that is helpful to have more info on the frame and motor. Corrosion on these things in Ontario are truly astounding. I bought my 1988 FJ62 new, had it undercoated and really drove it hard for 10 years, gravel runner, and the body was worse than yours. Sadly the tires were worn and I lost control on an icy road and a tree wrecked it. Had a '77 FJ40, rebuilt the engine but the body got away on me when the tub dropped onto the road after jumping a dump truck load of earth. So rust isn't the worst enemy my trucks have had, but it is a contributing factor.

I have gone out to see a number of trucks that turned out to be worse than the seller suggested. I think you have been candid with me, and I thank you for that. I will pm you if I decide to proceed, otherwise, I hope this exposure helps, and congrats on the 40.

Cheers, Geoffrey

Well I'm relucktanty going to drop my price to$4500.00. So if I don't sell her for that I'll put her back into daily service, and sell something else. If you are looking for a great platform for your build look no farther.
