Hi all, first post. I'm going to look at an 86 FJ60 today with 126k mi, buyer is asking $3500. It hasn't had any major mechanical work done. Only body rust are two quarter-sized spots on the rear part of both drivers side wheel wells, don't know about frame/undercarriage. Body looks straight. Interior is in good shape (few dash cracks, worn driver seat) and original paint still shines (owner kept the LC in their barn). New shocks, newer tires. Everything is stock. Up until 8 months ago it lived in Montana with its original owner then was driven from there to Southern California by their son who is selling it.

The FJ60 is my dream car so I want go into this purchase armed with whatever info you all can give me so I can ask the right questions. Never owned a LC before but I am a diehard Toyota-head who will have to part with my beloved 93 4Runner if I buy this FJ60.

What should I look for?
Any trouble areas I should pay attention to?
What should I expect?

thanks in advance

look closely at the frame, especially the rear.
and keep in mind your gas milage.....

It's low miles (a plus). Rust is a huge negative, so check carefully. Did it pass smog? All the standard pre-purchase things are worthwhile to check. Front axle rebuilt/knuckle rebuild has probably not been done, so factor that into your costs going forward.

Check the sticky FAQ up top on "new" 60's for hints on what things you might need to do to bring it up to reliable.

Check for rust under the rear seats. There is an inexplicable "vent" of some sort in the rear wheel well that lets water, etc into a void below the seats.

The owner is finalizing the title transfer to his name right now. He said he will get it smogged this weekend and has no reason to believe it will fail (unlikely he'd admit to otherwise).

Based upon my description, what do you think of his $3500 asking price?

thanks for the tips

thanks, will definitely check out. Does the bench fold up/out or do I need to bring my toolbox?

Rust is more important to me than low mileage. I would rather have a completely rust free car with 226K than a low mileage car with two rust spots. Since the car is from a wet climate, I would be concerned.

You are in Cali... "the land of the rust free cruiser"... why not buy a westcoast LC?

I'm not being intentionally picky. The LC will be my daily driver so I want something that will require little work from the get go. Every truck is different, I understand that, however an around-towner with 126k is more enticing to me than one with 200k+ on it.

Montana isn't really a wet climate, and for the most part they dont salt the roads. I would check to make sure it didn't spend time in some other area (like Minnesota), or from one of the larger cities in MT. They will drop some salt before stop signs to get the permasnow melted in Bozo and Billings...

You are in Orange county - keep looking for a non rusty vehicle. They will be out there, but from how you are asking, it seems that you are looking for affirmation that you should buy it, and I doubt you will get that - rust is a big problem.

There are too many considerations you need to make before answering that question - your time horizon is one key one. If you plan on keeping the vehicle for a "long time" then no matter what, any truck with rust would be out the window for me....

Assuming the two small rust spots on the driver side wheel wells are the ONLY rust spots that can be found, would you still advise against purchasing this particular LC even considering the details in my initial post?

If theres no frame rust, the asking price seems reasonable to me. I paid $2000 for an '87 with 203k on it with similar rust spots to yours. I am in Nebraska though, so true "rust-free" Cruisers are few and far between.

have you noticed more rust spots popping up since you bought it?

A lot of the focus of this thread so far has been on rust, which is an important consideration....$3500 in the California market is right on the edge of "is it crap, or is it a good deal". Also look at the PS pump, if it's spewing onto the smog pump the pump may be on it's way out, and my springs were shot when i bought my '84 two years ago so you may need to replace them or upgrade. Definately search the FAQ and read as many of the 60 tech pages as you have time for.

How do I determine if the springs are bad?

Go for it

I bought an 84 FJ-60 4 years ago. Alot was said about rust here on the board. Rust is not the end of the world. Being in California, the rust will likely grow very slowly.

A little history on mine, sounds like a similar situation. Mine was bought in Ft. Collins Colorado, and spent all of its life in SouthEastern Wyoming. We have snow, and wet half the year. Salt has been a recent addition to city streets and they also salt the highways now for the past 5-10 years in the winter. Montana sees a similar winter as most of Wyoming. Rust will happen with time. The rear fender well area is the first spot on 60's. Mine has rust forming and breaking through above the rear wheels, below the doors. It also has a rust spot or two on the back, near the tailpipe and mudflaps and such. So far it has developed very little over the last few years, and it is not a huge deal. I also found a bad rust spot on the underside, below the passenger door, on the back side of the rocker panel. All the places that rust, are places that trap dust and such, and then it gets wet in the rain and snow, and starts rusting through. Beyond that, the finish of the paint and such is great on mine. Frame wise, the area below the gas tank, where the spare tire is mounted is rusted pretty bad. Toyota boxed all the frame on the forward section, it is hard to tell if rust is forming in there. But it does. I had a buddy with an 81 Toyota pickup, where the frame dipped down, in front of the rear springs, his boxing was rusting through there. I would look for similar holes on a 60. By the spare tire, Toyota put two C channels together, like plastic cups. My inner C channel is distorted from rust froming against the bigger peice. It is a bad deal, but is is rusting slowly.

As for mechanicals. Mine had 175,000 on it when I bought it. I replaced all of the orignal heater hoses and fuel lines. I replaced the original water pump shortly after, as it started to sqwall. I got a 20 dollar rebuild kit at NAPA and rebuilt the power steering pump, replaced belts, took the smog pump apart, cleaned it out, and lubed the rear bearing, front is sealed. So far so good. I replaced the alternator last year. I did the front end, knuckle rebuild, and brakes, and changed all the gear case oil. I rebuilt the carb, adjusted valves and fixed the windshield wipers. I just recently replaced all the spring bushings and shocks. Recharged and converted the AC last summer.

I bought mine for 3600, wonderful interior, clean inside and out. Now it has 202,000 miles, runs great, leaks a little oil.

I had around 1500-1700 in repairs over the last few years, but it is sound for now.

I'm guessing you will probably need to look at the same issues I did, for a stock, regularly driven 60. Front end defientley needs looked at. Very liquid looking grease/oil on the balls behind the steering knuckles tells you the front end is leaking oil through the knuckles. Very few owners ever touched the front ends until it was too late. My FJ-40 went 25 years without it, but all was fine. It is one of those 100,000 mile type of service items really.

As for the rust, yes I have some. It is kind of unsightly. Will the frame rust through on mine, yes, in this climate, in about 15-20 years I suspect, in Cali, you are probably okay for awhile. For the price, offer 3200, see if he takes it. If it runs good and will make you a fair vehicle for several years, until you can save up to replace it or really restore it , then get it and drive it. A little maintainence will go a long way on a Cruiser.

Thanks for the words, MoCoNative. I'll be sure to spend a lot of time on the ground looking for cancer on the underside.

Funny, my wife and I are thinking of moving to the Denver area and will be checking it out in May. I figure if I really want my FJ60, I'll have better chances finding one in decent shape here in SoCal than anywhere else.

Just came back from looking at the LC...

there's definitely an exhaust leak somewhere in/near the engine compartment, probably the manifold. the only rust on the undercarriage is on the rear differential plate, on the exhaust pipe after the muffler and mild surface rust on the leaf springs, no biggie.

PS pump looks fine. newish starter. new master cylinder. new shocks. owner is unaware of when it was last smogged. idles rough.

the interior is pretty clean, especially the upholstery. dash is cracked and a dog dug through the rear cargo carpet.

it drove alright, just driving it around the neighborhood was indicative to me that it wouldn't do much more than 65 on the freeway.

owner is going to get it smogged this weekend to finalize the transfer of ownership to him from his parents and it will have Cali plates. i'll call him again on Saturday to see if it passed. the only thing i'm not too big on is the colors, it is brown/brown.

thanks a lot for your advice, it is much appreciated.
