My AC wasn't working, so I assumed it needed a charge. So I put some R134 (it was already converted), and it started to get cooler, then the belt started screaming--the compressor was barely turning, basically locking up.

Can that be repaired, or is the compressor shot. If it is shot, where can I get a replacement compressor. It's a 24V system, so I assume a 12V compressor would not work. Or is there a way to make it work..

Need some help here!

Comp is most likely toast, get a new one or re-built.
Since your comp. runs via a belt you need not worry about 12v/24v...till the clutch and from here we'll let someone else chime in.

I have an extra compressor that is 12V from an 85 BJ70. Can I just swap the clutch out, ie put the 24V clutch on the compressor that has a 12V

I swapped the clutches, and it's working great-almost too cold! On full blast, it blows at 38 degrees on the highway!

Anybody know where I can get my spare compressor rebuilt?

Depending on the age of the compressor not too many companies will rebuild as they cant be sure the clearances etc inside the compressor itself will be in spec for new bearings etc. I went through this exact same drama with my 24v hj61.. I pulled the 24v unit out and swapped the 24v magnet off it to a 12v unit, that is the only difference between the two, you can even use the new clutch off the 12v unit so in theory all of the running gear ie clutch and bearings will be new.

Hope this helps

The clutch is the culprit more times than not.:)
If you have any additional issues you might want to check the expansion valve.....some of the crud from the compressor can end up in there.
