Folks I reluctantly have decided to move on to another project yet to be determined. Many hours in this one. Really hoping that this one goes to someone who has loved it as much as I have loved getting rolling right.

1984 Toyota FJ60 originally purchased February 1986 in Great Falls, Montana before moving west to Oregon in ’92 where she lived until moving to Virginia approximately 3 years ago.

An absolutely rust-free vehicle that wears 99%+ of her original desert tan paint with the exception of the passenger side front door. No accidents and clean CarFax. A well-cared for, 3 owner vehicle, that has lived what is believed to be its entire life under roof most of which has been in a heated garage. A true survivor with an exceptional interior that is a 9.5 with a perfect dash with no cracks and outstanding original carpet. Great original seats and door cards that are clean with no stains.

The ultimate mission was taking an FJ60 from an already legendary status to an even higher level as an over lander that would truly go anywhere. It has been thoughtfully modified with a mindset toward the highest possible reliability. This very robust build professionally executed where all parts work together and are readily available, since as we all know many FJ60 Toyota parts are becoming a bit more difficult to source.

The original 4.2L 2F engine was swapped for a professionally installed highly reliable GM Vortec 350 crate variant that provides a bit more than double the original 2F horsepower and approximately one and half times the torque of the stock 2F. This power plant provides the highway confidence that the 2F motor simply cannot and is a joy to drive. The exhaust is routed through GM cast exhaust manifolds to 2.5” diameter pipes into a single 3” pipe. The engine is supplied fuel from the stock fuel tank via an electric fuel pump into a Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor.

The Toyota H41F 4 speed transmission was replaced with a considerably more robust new NV4500 5 speed transmission that provides a considerably deeper first gear at 6.34:1 and includes a 27% overdrive 5th gear. The NV4500 transmission contributes to an excellent crawl ratio and offers an excellent street able highway gear ratio with engine RPM of approximately 2,000 RPM at 60 MPH and will effortlessly cruise at 75 MPH. A highly reliable Centerforce High Performance clutch was also fitted at the time of the swap.

The Toyota transfer case was exchanged for a NP 241 chain driven part time 4-wheel drive design. The NP241 offers a very smooth shift and a deeper 4-wheel low at 2.72 to 1, as well as the typical 1 to 1 ratio in both 2- and 4-wheel high position.

A custom double Cardin Joint rear driveshaft connects the transfer case to the 1 ton GM 14 Bolt rear axle and a 1 Ton GM driveshaft connects the GM Dana 60 front axle to the transfer case. All Universal joints were replaced with new Spicer units as well.

The GM 14 Bolt rear runs a Detroit Locker to assure the maximum possible traction when needed and the Dana 60 front axle is fitted with an Eaton electric locker should extra traction be necessary in potentially compromising situations. The front locker is switchable from the dash. The front axle includes a Warn differential cover shield and the rear axle is fitted with a Ruff Country pinion guard for extra protection.

Both axles have new Spicer and GM wheel bearing and seals. Both axles run new Yukon 4.56:1 ring and pinion gearing that provide the best possible compromise for off and on road. The GM 1-ton Dana 60 front axle retains the factory disc brakes and the 1-ton GM 14 Bolt axle has been fitted with disc brakes for improved stopping and to simplify maintenance. Both axles utilize their original axle shafts and robust 8 lug spindles. The Warn Locking Hubs were serviced at the time the axles were built and engage effortlessly.

The front axle is set up as a high steer arrangement to better protect the steering linkage from potential rock and log hits. A PSC Hydraulic Ram Steering system has been installed to improve steering feel in challenging situations and improve drivability. The PSC steering booster makes steering effortless. Further a Ruff Country Anti Wrap Bar is installed to mitigate rear axle wrap under hard acceleration.

The stock springs have been mounted over the axles to provide approximately 5” of suspension lift for improved ground clearance and to provide more than adequate clearance for new 35” General Grabber X3 Tires. The new General Grabber X3 tires are mounted and speed balanced on powder coated Hummer H2 aluminum rims. The Hummer H2 rims were sourced for their light weight and 5.5” backset which increases the strength of the axle platform. A full-size spare Grabber X3 and H2 wheel is mounted at the rear of vehicle should there be a need while off road.

A custom designed and fabricated skid plate to protect the engine oil pan, transmission and transfercase has factory appearance.

The ARB front bumper is fitted with a new never used 10,000 lb Warn EVO winch. The custom fabricated body armor and rock rails are powder coated. The rear bumper has a 2” receiver hitch and includes a 7-pin plug trailer wiring harness. An electric trailer brake control is included for towing an off-road camper. Firestone air bags are fitted above the rear axle to improve ride when the vehicle is fully loaded with camping gear. The are aired up and down via valves mounted on the top of the driver side rear bumper currently covered with Skull valve caps.

A Warrior Spare Tire License Plate and 3rd rear brake light with custom LED License Plate light has been fitted for additional rear vehicle safety. All marker lights utilize LED replacement bulbs for additional brightness. Hella High Intensity Headlights are utilized. Hella horns have replaced the stock Toyota horns.
The rear area wall cardboard cards have been replaced with custom aluminum sheet panels for additional durability. 4 anchor points have been added for improved gear hold down during off-roading. A 12 Volt 600W plug has also been added in the rear interior for running a fridge or other electric items.
A new Bluetooth Sony head unit with hands free calling, Alpine Amp and four high-end Morel speakers have been professionally installed for improved sound.

A lockable Tuffy center console has been installed for its larger storage volume and improved comfort.
A dual Optima Yellow Top Deep Cycle AGM battery arrangement provides more than adequate engine starting torque and provides auxiliary power for the winch and other electrical needs. An Eaton Busman relay and fuse box has been mounted to accommodate any additional electric circuits needs to run additional lighting and off-road needs. The vehicle is wired for a CB radio including antenna mounting on the ARB front bumper for communication with other off roaders in your group.

A high-performance aluminum radiator with high volume thermostat controlled electric fan provides more than adequate engine cooling. The fan is tied to thermostat and has an in cab-controlled switch.

All grease, lubricating fluids and cooling fluids are new in the past 6 months and the vehicle has traveled less than 500 miles since the build completion. The odometer indicates a total of 203, xxx on the frame and body. The engine, transmission, and transfer case have just under 10,000 miles of primarily street use since their fitment.

Sound deadening has been installed in the doors, rear quarter panels and tailgate to quiet the ride.

This unique thoughtfully built FJ60 is highly capable off-road but remains fun to drive on road and retains good road manners. Designed to take you where the typical FJ60 simply won’t.
