1982 FJ60, NC inspection and a new carb?

Just wondering if any of you NC guys have swapped out factory carbs for trollholes or webers and passed inspection. In other words, what's the minimum required emission equipment wise, to pass inspection? Everything's there, but I'm having carb trouble and finding probs with lots of the vacuum parts :censor: and it'd be much easier just to swap it out, but I need to keep it tagged. I'm in Buncombe county if it makes any difference.
 
Pre-OBDII vehicles get safety inspection only, no emissions. Not sure they even have to do a visual on exhaust/smog?
 
I know that they made James put a cat. conv. back on it. Previous owner had two mufflers on it.
 
From NCDOT website...

North Carolina is fighting ozone-forming emissions from gasoline-operated cars and light duty trucks. Since 2002, licensed inspection stations have been required to use a more effective method for testing the air pollution controls on cars and trucks. It requires them to conduct inspections using the vehicle’s on-board diagnostic (OBD) system, computerized equipment installed on all new vehicles since 1996. The cost of a Safety/Emissions inspection is $30. Though they are still required to obtain a safety inspection, diesel-operated vehicles are exempt from the annual emissions inspection.

From what I've gleaned, visual inspection required until they are 35 yrs old, no emissions. Replacing the OEM carb with Weber or one of Marshall's "should" not be an issue as long as all your lines are connected. Yet, I'd send a PM to Marshall to verify, he has always been very helpful and informative. I'd also look at the various "de-smog" threads to find the vacuum line diagram by JimC (fj40Jim).

Marshall's carbs look very nice and are priced well IMHO...
 
Yeah, this last place checked for a cat and air pump. I thought the troll carb looks a lot more stock than a weber does, and I'll fit the stock filter back on. Hell, maybe I'll just leave all the vacuum lines in there....haha
 
I just had a friend with an 82 heep, and the inspection station did a visual on the exhaust - and failed him for a leak in the header - I think it's luck of the draw and who does the inspection.......
 
I was failed for no smog pump, air rail, etc - at two different places. Then I found a guy :) Just 2 more years and I'm going "antique". That was before 'pane, but I'd love for them to hook a sniffer to me now; I'd have far lower emissions than even the newest gassers and diesels.

...that is why it is nice to have connections. I had to get a tag for the '76 last week, and had to get it inspected for the first and last time. I drove the heep to my buddies shop and just handed them the 40's registration.
