Looking at at 1980 hj45. The rear tail lights seem to be on the frame like a fj40. On other 45's I have seen the tail lights are smaller and part of the bed. Does anyone have a 1980 fj or hj45 to confirm this? Or maybe the 80 I am looking at was a cab chassis only and had to have a different configuration for the tail lights.
Also this truck has a H series 6cy diesel motor anyone out there have this?

99% sure all 45 with a OEM bed had the lights set into the body, not the frame

Check the International Cruiser Tech section for some opinions of the 'H' engine. I'm sure there are more than a few folks there who can tell you all about it. Should be a sweet powerplant. What country are you in/what country is this 45 coming from?

I did not know that the 45 moved the tank under the cruiser like a 40 did. Interesting info.

Yep, never seen one in person, but seen photos.

For some reason Alberta has a lot more 45s than BC and thats where I have seen these later models.

The H engine is as good as a 2F, prolly the weakest of the diesels for durability, it lacks oil skirt cooling and when turbo-d they tend to fail.

One that comes to mind is Toms HJ60 with 1HZ, he limped it into my place and when the head was pulled we found No.6 cylinder pushed a ring by the piston, bounced around for a bit then took out the turbo on the way out........

Still overall in a non turbo form, its a great engine.

H engines never came to North America except in forklifts where they are renowned for their durability. 2Hs came to Canada right after the 3B and suffered harsh criticism because they were not as durable. It turns out that they are likley the third best of the diesels rather than the worst.

I've seen they later 45 body style and it suffers from rust the same way as its *j40 counterpart.

I'm trying to remember what the taillights look like on the South African built 45s. The bed is differtnt for sure. Jeff Steiger from Vancouver has one.

I'll look for a pic of a 45 cab chasis, bet the lights are just hung off the frame

My 76 HJ45 came with bed mounted taillights. No provisions in the frame for the lights. Fuel tank in the cab tho. Might have changed by 1980.

Not happy with the H engine. Great fuel economy. Anemic power. If I cannot sell the truck as-is, I will prolly pull the H for a V-8 conversion.
