1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ55 Project w/ AC
Asking: $7000
Quote from listing:
"Available for sale is my 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser project, which has stalled due to a lack of time and money to complete the project correctly.
I purchased this rig in February with the intention of completing a frame-off restoration to factory standards. When purchased, this FJ55 was running and driving well (aside from worn out steering and sticky brakes). It is highly, highly original, with just about every original nut, clip, and component present. Body rust is extensive, but it is currently in bare metal and mounted on a rotisserie, so there should be no surprises for prospective purchasers.
This is a later model FJ55 with factory 4.2L 2F engine, 4-speed transmission, and front disc brakes. All emissions components are present and assembled, but likely not currently working. Dealer installed air conditioning system was present on vehicle when purchased and is included in sale. Compressor will likely need rebuilt but AC system complete and in very good shape. Every part and piece of hardware removed was bagged and labeled, and I have 500+ photos detailing the disassembly process.
Frame/Drivetrain
- Frame and drivetrain has been steam cleaned and come fully assembled.
- Frame is completely rust free.
- Engine ran well and did not smoke when disassembly began 3 months ago. I cannot verify, but pedal wear, floor mat condition, and general originality indicate the 70k miles shown on odometer is accurate.
- 4-speed transmission shifted well and transfer case engaged 4WD high and 4WD low without trouble.
- My plan was to replace only the seals and gaskets in engine, transmission, and transfer case and leave the internals alone.
Body
- Currently mounted on rotisserie, in bare metal.
- Lower portions very rusty; roof is completely rust free.
- High quality rust repair already completed on rear tailgate and front clip. Both are in bare metal and included with project.
- All four doors are totally rust free, straight, and fit properly.
- Hood is rust free and straight.
- All chrome is present and very presentable.
- All glass is included and in good shape.
Interior
- Interior is highly original and most components in very good shape. Preservation of all of the unique interior pieces was a big reason I thought this particular rig would be a good candidate for restoration.
- Dash very good (one repairable crack; no fading).
- Glove box door very good.
- All original buttons and switches.
- All gauges work as they should.
- Original rubber floor mat is the nicest I've ever seen.
- Original seat covers are nice, other than a few splits on seat bottom.
- Door cards retain all trim (ashtrays, door handles, etc.).
- All passenger windows operated and sealed as they should.
- Rear window motor runs but plastic gear is broken (common problem, reproduction available).
Additional parts included with sale:
- NOS passenger side fender (very rare piece).
- New set of reproduction rear taillights.
- Brand new windshield glass and weather-stripping.
- (7) Factory FJ40/55 steel wheels (in addition to wheels and very good tires on vehicle).
- Original rear bumper (very straight).
- 500+ photos documenting disassembly process.
- Complete set of factory Toyota service manuals.
- Custom rotisserie for body.
This is a worthy project for someone with more time and experience to complete the required rust repair than I have. Alternatively, this would be a perfect setup for someone looking to update an early model FJ55 to a 2F, 4-speed, front disc brake set up. If entire project fails to sell, I will begin parting it, starting with major components first.
Title in hand. Willing to negotiate delivery within reasonable distance.
